This is not a healthy coping mechanism…Valjean is trying to build a house where the foundation is damaged.

I was scraping the barrel a little bit to find something to build on in this chapter which just resulted in me knowing a lot more about the linnet bird than before. I found an English baroque song called “Mark how the lark and linnet sing” by John Blow which caught my attention by using both of Cosette’s bird sobriquets. It’s nice enough (I’m not the biggest fan of Baroque music or the harpsichord) and the poem’s theme of welcoming the coming spring with birdsong goes nicely with this chapter.

Think of this as the last breath of calm companionship for these two.

Okay, so, I studied biblical Hebrew for two years. There’s a particular section of Genesis 22, the story of the binding of Isaac, that scholars near unanimously agree was added smack into the middle of the story at a later date by a different author/s after the story of Abraham and Isaac had already existed. In Genesis 22:15-18, an angel calls down a second time from heaven, saying that, because Abraham was willing to sacrifice his only sun, the LORD has sworn on himself that Abraham’s descendants will be blessed forever. This is notable because these passages are stylistically and linguistically at odds with the rest of the chapter and seems to have been added solely to double down on the moral message of the story. Originally, God offers no reward for Abraham proving his faith, only notes that now He knows Abraham is “like one who fears God.” The God of Genesis doesn’t swear on his own name, He very rarely would make this kind of grandiose promise of prosperity. The addition of these passages not only departs from the established character of this version of God, it also subtly distorts what we might consider the original intention of the story.

My point—yes, I do have one—is that’s almost exactly what this chapter feels like, or really just Valjean’s speech in particular. We haven’t seen this man speak this much in the entire book so far, but suddenly he’s ready to preach a moral philosophy to a mugger? I don’t doubt that his actions and thoughts are very much in character, but this speech is…out of place, just like Genesis 22:15. Thematically, it’s a total non-sequitur and stylistically, it doesn’t feel like anything Valjean might actually say. “You are unwilling to be a working-man, you will be a slave…Ah! you have refused the honest weariness of men, you shall have the sweat of the damned.” Does this sound like a man who worked to exhaustion his entire youth with nothing to show, who did forced labor in prison for 19 years only to afterward realize it meant nothing in the eyes of society?

This leads me to point out that Valjean’s points don’t hold up under any systemic scrutiny. If you don’t labor, you end up in hell, watching those who did labor happily toil away above you. Great. Remind me again, what Valjean has earned from labor? And really think about it, is it labor that makes Valjean’s story meaningful? Was it hard work and determination that changed his life? Not to say he didn’t have those qualities and do that work, but, let’s be honest, it was only possible through the sheer luck and circumstance of the bishop, who himself was only in a place to help by merit of the privilege of his birth and a number of random factors. You just can’t pull yourself up by the bootstraps when you can’t afford bootstraps to begin with.

Valjean ends with “the hardest of all labor is robbery,” which I would conditionally agree with, it’s really hard work to be poor and unemployed, much harder than being, say, a bourgeoisie charity man who strolls to the Luxembourg Gardens each day. And it boggles my mind that Jean Valjean, who was forced to steal bread so his family wouldn’t die despite him doing back breaking work every single damn day, then says “It is not so hard to be an honest man.” ??? What story am I reading? The entire point of Valjean as a character that it is hard to be an honest man in a corrupt society and that honesty isn’t always rewarded in this life, but we should do it anyway for the greater good of humankind. Coming from Valjean, this speech, to me, borders on hypocrisy.

Now, I’m willing to believe that Valjean himself still has some hangups about his worth as a person and we’ve seen him struggle with the ideas of penance and sacrifice. But, to bring back my biblical example, this speech, if not this entire chapter, reads to me as a later addition to an already structurally sound story in service of some heavy-handed moral lesson on the part of Hugo. This doesn’t come across as a genuine character moment because we haven’t seen Valjean ever express views like these before (except in BBC but fuck th—). Hugo using Valjean as the mouthpiece for his lecture on labor distorts the message of Valjean’s story, and not in a good way. It shifts the framing of Valjean’s harsh past as an injustice that should never have happened to a Fantine-esque narrative of divinity necessarily attained through suffering.

In a really weird convergence of thematic materials, I was listening to the Friends at the Table finale episode of COUNTER/Weight as I wrote this, a story in which the literal big bad villain is the very concept of “Rigor.” I think Austin Walker puts it best when he says, “You shouldn’t have to convince yourself that the best thing to do with your life is to…work.”
