Towards the end of the nightly session, I heard a peculiar sound. The source of the sound is difficult for me to identify. However, I do know that it wasn’t coming from outside of me. The sound would stop when I would pause meditation to observe around with my eyes shut.

Sounds heard during deep meditation don’t seem to have a source. Maybe that’s why these sounds come under ‘unstruck sound’ in Kundalini and chakra meditation related literature. The drum like striking sound that I heard last night wasn’t a sound I was picking up from my eardrums.

At the risk of sounding boringly repetitive, I am going to describe my experience of coming out of one meditation with the sensation of oily ears. It happened more than a decade back. As it happened, I remembered words from Swami Vivekananda’s Raja Yoga regarding the same.

I know I am repulsed by the sound of chalk scratching against a black board. Repulsed enough to turn seriously nauseous. What does a sound have anything to do with the belly? A decade back while meditating one day, my repeating meditation technique had found the perfectly undistracted groove in the mind. The technique revolves around two syllables: Hong Sau.

Wherever in the mind the groove was, it seems that it corresponded to the sound receptors in my brain. I came out tilting my head and scratching perfectly dry ears. I was so sure that the meditation had turned them oily. The oiliness was all in my head.

I woke this morning (5 June) and read as much as I could with regards sounds heard during meditation. My searches were on google and I read some articles that the search lead to. When I read about the sound of ‘war drum’ in an article, I just had to make another search on google: war drum sound.

The third video that I found had the sound I was looking for. While I watched the video with sound, I knew that the sound I had heard last night was not my heart. The rhythm wouldn’t match. The war drum like sound came from within my head.
