WE MADE IT!!! It’s 2021...finally. Happy New Year y’all. I’m excited to get this party started right and start listening to and talking about MUSIC. Lots and lots of music! I promised last time, that I would try and keep these much shorter. *FINGERS CROSSED* So, here goes.
Jason Isbell an the 400 Unit
“The Nashville Sound” (2017)
Since we all went on lockdown, most of us musicians have been struggling to put out our music and perform in any way that we can. This has led to a lot of streaming shows both free and ticketed. One of those artists whose online shows I’ve really enjoyed is Jason Isbell. One of the original members of The Drive-By Truckers, Isbell has really matured over the years both as a player and as a songwriter. And holy shit....this album is no exception.
The Nashville Sound was produced by Grammy winner, Dave Cobb who has worked with greats such as Chris Stapleton, Brandi Carlile and Sturgil Simpson. This is Jason’s 6th album and 3rd credited with the 400 Unit. Recorded at RCA studio B in Nashville, the thing that stands out the most for me is Jason’s incredible songwriting. It’s emotional, tells a beautiful story and still rocks like only Isbell can. The first track “Last of My Kind” is a beautiful acoustic ballad that kicks things off right and the title says it all. Followed by the haunting “Cumberland Gap” which rocks and tells the story of a young man from a small town on a mission to drink himself to death. The third track, however I think is one of my favorites. “Tupelo” is another beautiful, well-written ballad by the Green Hill, Alabama native.
Other highlights are “We Were Vampires” which I’ve seen him perform many times in those streaming shows and “Anxiety” which he co-wrote with his wife and fiddle player Amanda Shires. And don’t forget “Chaos and Clothes”, another brilliant composition of Isbell’s.
As a touring musician, I once opened for Jason Isbell. I don’t remember a whole lot of the show thanks to large quantities of alcohol I was consuming back in those days. However, I remember it fucking rocked...HE fucking rocked. “The Nashville Sound” is another reason why Jason Isbell is at the forefront of the Americana Rock scene. Definitely check out this record and even better, buy yourself a ticket and check him out online! And once this stupid pandemic subsides, get your ass out to one of his shows. You won’t be sorry.
