Samuel "Sam" Graham Hargrave was born to a military commander, Graham Hargrave, who died when the boy was four years old. Sam's mother left him in the care of his uncle, Donovan "Donny" Hargrave, the younger brother of Sam's late father, because she only had Sam to keep her husband from being unfaithful on business trips.

Sam doesn't remember much about his father, but he believes that he was a good man and that he will return home, no matter how much Uncle Donny mocks his memory, calling him a bastard and a murderer. This is fundamentally incorrect and is merely a fantasy of a jealous and envious younger brother. All Sam has of his father are the dog tags on a chain that he kept under a floorboard, then in his pocket to keep his uncle from getting angry, and after he escaped, he hung them around his neck when he found out that his father had died a hero.

At the time, Graham was the best example of an older brother, perfect in his parents' eyes, serving in the military, protecting his country. And Donny was always second, always not good enough. In the end, it was Graham who advised Donny to marry a woman who left him for her lover. Donny blames Graham for all his troubles and problems. He has achieved nothing in life and is the unofficial leader of a gang of marginalized individuals.

Donovan himself wasn't thrilled with this gift of fate in the form of his older brother's son. His own wife had been secretly cheating on him with her lover for years, and she had given birth to a daughter, but it was revealed after Ashley's birth when she didn't resemble her parents but rather resembled her mother's colleague from work. In fact, no one would blame his wife for this, Donny is, to put it mildly, a difficult person: a drunkard, a drug addict, and abuser. As a result, Donny won custody of his adopted daughter in court, although neither the woman nor her lover put up much resistance.

Ashley Hargrave is five years older than Sam. While they lived together, she was almost like a mother to Sam, but their relationship was more like that of a brother and sister. Ashley stood up for her brother and was always a heroic role model for him. Donny was infuriated by his adopted children's united independence against him. He not only verbally threatened them but also regularly physically abused them, and he even planned to marry Ashley off to his drinking buddy's son. So when Ashley turned eighteen, she ran away from home with the help of her friend, Jens, and later her husband. She couldn't take Sam with her because he was thirteen years old, and it would have been considered kidnapping under the law, and she needed to disappear.

Of course, Sam was very affected by these events, and in a negative way. He was betrayed by the person closest to him, and left to be devoured by the beast alone. Although he understood why his sister had run away, he held a grudge against her for a very long time, and did not trust people, especially those who treated him well. Sam is always on the lookout for a trick or a blow after a caress or a deal. He believes that nothing comes easy, and he knows how to protect himself.

Living in the epicenter of the gang has taught him dirty tricks and methods of survival. He hates his Uncle Donny and his friends. But due to constant malnutrition and stress, he cannot give them a full-fledged rebuff. By the age of eighteen, he is quite thin, but wiry, knows how to fight, carries a knife and a metal bat.

Uncle Donny also has a well-known narcissistic veterinarian friend, Mark August Keller, who treats his people and Sam without attracting the attention of the authorities. Mark could have given Sam and Ashley to an orphanage, and that would have been the right thing to do, but he didn't because it wasn't his business. But because of him, Sam is still alive. So even though Sam hates Mark for his inaction and fears him for his cunning and unpredictability, he is still grateful for his help.

The only time Sam stood up to Uncle Donny, he ended up with an ugly scar from a knife wound across his forehead, through his left eye, cheek, and chin. In return, Donny was cut by a broken bottle that Sam held in his bare hand. That day, Sam ran away from home and never returned, despite being sought out to teach him a lesson.

Depending on the AU, Sam may join Bjorn Reed (his godfather) and the Waltz's Dogs, whose commander was Graham Hargrave, or personally join Vincent Waltz, or join Peacekeepers and the 404 unit through Aiden Caldwell, who helped him as a pilgrim. But his partner will always be Chris Bluefield of Lieutenant Rowe's squad.
