The next film from the AFI list is a personal favorite and one of the few comedies from the 40s that I think is legitimately funny; it is Preston Sturges’ satire Sullivan’s Travels (1941). This film is one of the first self aware movies about the ridiculous nature of Hollywood. It is also one of the first movies to feature the lovely Veronica Lake. This movie is also the point of so many references and nods from the last 80 years that watching it feels like a film history lesson. The film was not popular when it first came out and did not even get nominated for any major awards because it wasn’t a drama or a screwball comedy, but a satire the poked fun at Hollywood producers. Today we can look back and admire the film for not holding back, and that is what I intend to do. I had a hard time finding it except to rent or on Netflix DVD, but it is completely worth a couple of bucks to watch. This falls in my top 5 “Surprise Favorites” from the AFI top 100. I originally started watching all the movies on the list in hopes of finding some gems that I hadn’t heard of and this was one of the movies that fell in that category. So please join me if you have somr extra time on your hands, and let us laugh with Sullivan’s Travels.
