Rock Island F9M 4168 by Chuck Zeiler Via Flickr: Rock Island F9M 4168, date, location, and photographer unknown, Chuck Zeiler collection. This locomotive was built in January 1948 as UP F3 1412A ( c/n 4617 ) on EMD Order E818A. It was renumbered to 1412, later renumbered to 1519. During September 1958 it was rebuilt by EMD to F9M 539, retaining most of its F3 carbody features. During February 1972, this unit and 18 other rebuilt F3A's were sold to the Rock Island, and the RI send a like number of their units to EMD for trade-in credit on UP's order of SD40-2's. The Rock also acquired 12 F9M B-units in a like sale/trade at the same time. This particular unit sports a UP-made snowplow for duties in the Pacific Northwest. Number 4168 was traded to EMD in mid-1976.
