Tony gets clingy after Peter comes back. He’s drifting between consciousness and drug-induced sleep after each surgery, and he’s so out of it he can’t tell the difference from Peter disappearing and him closing his eyes.

He keeps reaching out with his good hand, keeps muttering “you’re coming back, right?” and “Pep, don’t let him wander off, just give me a second,” and “don’t go anywhere, wait for me.”

And Peter’s sitting at his bedside in the hospital. He’s smushed in a seat with a little girl he doesn’t know that propped herself up on his lap and promptly called him big brother. Pepper’s beside him, and they’re all weepy, and he doesn’t even feel like he really belongs there, but Tony is adamant that he stays.

He’s trying not to think about how he’s the first thing Tony looks for in the room when his eyes open. He’s trying to convince himself he’s not all that important, here, because maybe it’ll make it hurt less if Tony doesn’t end up pulling through.

Tony, pointing to Morgan: This is my daughter. I dreamt her existence up because she's so perfect and raised her with my soulmate. She's the sweetest and most precious thing on this planet

Tony, pointing to Peter and Harley: These are my raccoon sons. I found them in a pile of trash and they followed me home. As Morgan likes to say, "they're stinky but I love them anyways"

Peter: You love me? 🥺

Harley: Is that why Morgan got me deodorant for my birthday...I'm gonna throw it at her head

Morgan: AHHHHHHH

Tony: Anyways that's my family. How's yours?

*The kids running in the background*

Peter: Harley you can't persecute the truth if you want to abolish fascism!

Morgan: Daddy wrapped it, throw it at him!

Harley: I'm gonna throw it at all three of you like a boomerang—

Scott: Oh my family's great. We're happier than ever that Cassie's an only child

Tony: You and Hope don't want...?

Scott: No, no we really don't.

Tony, shrugging: To each their own—*gets wacked in the head with deodorant*

Do you think Pepper or Morgan ever look at that photo in their house and wonder who that kid next to Tony is? Do you think Happy looks at the same photo in his office and asks the same? Do you think he purposefully placed the Iron Man helmet there, covering Peter’s image, because he didn’t know who that kid was?

Peter meeting Morgan but Tony is still allergic to feelings.

Pepper signing up morgan for child’s rec soccer under a false name in the hopes of letting her have a normal hobby like other kids her age without the stares that come with the “stark” name.

and the team coach who looks just a little worse for ware and financially struggling, who looks haunted every time he interacts with morgan, who stares a little too long at Pepper.

and pepper can’t place him, but he seems so familiar. He must know who they are, somehow. She tries to help the coach out every once in a while, not enough money to out them but enough to help him a little.

And she’s pretty sure he knows, but she doesn’t get confirmation until morgan trips on the field and another kid accidentally kicks her. and there’s blood, and she’s limp, and pepper is rushing to her but the coach is too. and he calls out her real name as he does, the name he shouldn’t know.

and he’s asking “Vitals? Read vitals!” to thin air as he crouches beside her, and pepper realizes that he’s trying to communicate with the AI device she wears whenever operating under a false name.

he shouldn’t know her name. he shouldn’t know about the AI. he shouldn’t be this scared about a kid who should be a stranger. Something is *wrong* here.

but pepper has bigger things to worry about at the moment.

Tony Stark believed that he was designed to be an asshole.

He was raised by Howard, suffered the trauma of losing his parents young, then raised by Obadiah who ended up showing his true colours in the worst way.

He was hated in school for being too smart. Hated in university for being too young. Hated in his own company for being too cocky.

He told Pepper, once, early on in their relationship that he was never going to have children because he was sure he would be the worst father. She had brushed him off back then, but Tony would never put someone through that childhood.

And then, a 15 year old disaster with an attitude and crazy super powers stumbled into his life. At first, he thought it was a disaster waiting to happen. He tried not to get too close.

But when Peter Parker got angry at him, Tony didn’t feel a desire to hit him. He shouted back, he got frustrated and angry and wanted to break something in the lab after the argument was over but he never, not once, considered hitting him.

And when Peter was in a dangerous situation, Tony did everything in his power to help him. Not because he thought he had to, but because he wanted to.

When Peter told Tony that he was getting picked on in school because no one believed him about the internship, Tony personally visited Midtown Tech. It brought back ugly memories of high school and sitting at a parent-teacher conferences next to an empty chair because his mother was too busy. But he was there. He showed up for that kid in a way people never showed up for him.

And it made him realise. It made him realise that the bad people in his life weren’t programmed that way, they chose to do bad things. His father chose to say those words to him. His mother chose to never apologise to him. Obadiah chose to betray him.

And maybe, Tony could choose to be a good parent.
