In the days before multi-million dollar contracts, retired ballplayers had to fend for themselves. Here, Grover Cleveland Alexander, former star pitcher with the Phillies and a Baseball Hall of Famer since 1938, performs at Hubert's Flea Circus on West 42nd St. in Times Square, January 19, 1939. I'm not sure exactly how he's "performing."

I like how it’s not really about the romances, but more about the work put into the theatre.

The production is really so elaborate. The production of this, not the production within this, but that too.

The tap dancing was good and cool to me.

Spoiler: [About Jones and Barry putting on a show called Pretty Lady and everyone raving about it. Dorothy Brock will be playing the lead while Abner Dillon funds the show because of his love for Dorothy. She makes him believe that they are together as she uses him. Julian Marsh is directing and wants this to be a great show since he wants money. It’ll be his last show since he’s sick. During casting auditions, Lorraine relies on her connection with the dance director, Andy. She also catches up with Anytime Annie since she came back from abroad. Peggy Sawyer is new to this world since this is her first tryout for a show. The other girls direct her to the wrong rooms as she looks for who is in charge. One room leads her to the juvenile lead, Billy Lawler. He helps her and takes her to talk to Julian. On her way, she gets taken in by Lorraine and Annie and they’re casted through Andy. Later, it’s discovered that they’re one girl short and Billy brings in Peggy since she didn’t make an earlier cut. They all now are hired to practice for 5 weeks until the show. They practice singing, acting, and dancing constantly. Julian is rarely impressed. Dorothy is seeing Pat Denning, an old vaudeville partner, and he wants their relationship to be in the open. Julian learns of this relationship and because it jeopardizes their funding, he has Slim Murphy go get rid of Pat. Dorothy has a meal with Pat and talks about how her success brings him failure even though he thinks his failure brings him happiness. Peggy faints during one routine and is helped by Pat. He asks her out later and they get dinner together. Slim Murphy comes to Pat as Peggy is dropped off at home and he tells Pat to lay off Dorothy. Slim punches Pat as he leaves. Peggy takes him in, but her house owner doesn’t allow him. Peggy leaves with him and they head to his place. She has a drink and he allows her to sleep at night alone. Practice happens again and Billy doesn’t dance so well. Dorothy heads to Pat’s after and learns that he’s going away for a bit since his things are packed. Julian lets the dancers know that the show will be in Philly instead of Atlantic City. They practice in Philly and Julian lets them off for the night since the show is tomorrow. Billy asks out Peggy, but she agrees to a date tomorrow since she has one tonight. Andy blows off a date with Lorraine to console and be with Julian. Pat asks out Peggy, who mentions her prior engagement, and he takes her there. As they head to the hotel, Dorothy sees them go to the hotel together. She’s headed there with Abner too. She’s holding a party and she brushes off Abner and insults him. He is forced to leave humiliated and tells Julian that he won’t fund the show. They come to an agreement that he will keep funding and Dorothy will still be the lead if she apologizes that night. Peggy pushes off a guy hitting on her and she runs away in the hotel. She sees Pat entering Dorothy’s room and knocks on the door. She asks for him to Dorothy and a drunk Dorothy admonishes her and their relationship. She yells at Peggy and ends up fracturing her ankle. The doctor tends to her, but she can’t be in the show. At the show, Abner brings in Annie to be the new lead. Annie tells Julian that he should use Peggy. After some convincing, he trains Peggy. To help her feel the love of her character, he kisses her and she does better. She’s eventually ready. Billy tends to her until the start and kisses her after confessing his love. Dorothy shows how the fracture was good for her and gives good advice to Peggy. She also mentions that she’s marrying Pat. The show happens and Peggy is a hit. Afterwards, Julian listens to the people leaving and them talking about how directors get all the credit and how Julian will probably say that he’s the one who found Peggy.]

West 42nd Street, Manhattan (No. 1)

42nd Street is a major crosstown street in the New York City borough of Manhattan, running primarily in Midtown Manhattan and Hell's Kitchen. The street is the site of some of New York's best known buildings, including (east to west) the headquarters of the United Nations, Chrysler Building, Grand Central Terminal, New York Public Library Main Branch, Times Square, and the Port Authority Bus Terminal.  The street is known for its theaters, especially near the intersection with Broadway at Times Square, and as such is also the name of the region of the theater district (and, at times, the red-light district) near that intersection. 

During the American Revolutionary War, a cornfield near 42nd Street and Fifth Avenue was where General George Washington angrily attempted to rally his troops after the British landing at Kip's Bay, which scattered many of the American militiamen. Washington's attempt put him in danger of being captured, and his officers had to persuade him to leave. The rout eventually subsided into an orderly retreat. 

John Jacob Astor purchased a 70 acres (28 ha) farm in 1803 that ran from 42nd Street to 46th Street west of Broadway to the Hudson River.
