The 280E Brougham and Turbo models feature a newly adopted full-lockup automatic transmission with electronically controlled overdrive. This groundbreaking automatic transmission, controlled by the latest microcomputer, is truly a "dream automatic" with full lockup and overdrive. The microcomputer constantly and comprehensively controls information from sensors and switches such as shift, vehicle speed, and throttle, and combined with the microcomputer-controlled engine, it delivers efficient power, as well as dramatic improvements in quietness and fuel efficiency at high speeds. This revolutionary automatic transmission mechanism not only enables lockup in all gears from 1st to overdrive, but also includes downshift control (when the brake is applied in 3rd gear at a vehicle speed of 30-50 km/h, it forcibly shifts to 2nd gear).
