Walking the upper west side...I found out today by a person that...that’s where I am. #440negroes...i recently read an article in The Atlantic titled “The Weeping Time.” Written by Kris Monroe, the article discussed the auction of 440 slaves in Savannah, Georgia in 1859, just prior to the start of the Civil War. At that time, it was billed as the “largest auction of Negroes” in Georgia, but it was, in fact, the largest auction in US history. As I read the story, I realized that this was a significant slice of American history lost and forgotten.
