Review: Trendnet TEW-692GR 450 Mbps Concurrent Dual Band Wireless N Router
In the recent months or years we have seen the vast improvements in the amount of data and internet speeds available to consume; ISP such as Virgin Media can easily supply your home with up to 100Mb broadband. The only problem with that however is for them to keep the costs down they ten to provide cheap routers that sometimes defeats the purpose of having high speed internet in the first place. Companies like Trendnet then seeks to tie up that lose end by giving consumers the option to unleash the full potential of their broadband package.
In this case, the Trendnet TEW-692GR 450 Mbps Concurrent Dual Band Wireless N Router has a long name and will make a lot potential buyer wonder why they need such a router; well its specialty is that it is capable of creating 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks at the same time; it offers Gigabit Ethernet but no support for IPv6 and USB devices meaning you will not be able to connect USB printers or servers to share on your home network, which is quite disappointing considering the asking price. It is also as the only router currently on the market to stream 450 Mbps on both the 2.4- and 5-GHz bands so that is a bonus.
Installation of the wireless router is very straight forward with user manual available to follow, or if you are impatient, you simply attach it to your broadband modem via its WAN port, plug in the power which is provided and use a built in wizard to configure your internet connection; using the web interface you wil be able to set the security level of the router’s wireless network. Installation will only take you few minutes.
The TEW-692GR packs four Gigabit Ethernet ports, so will let you connect up to four wired connection and experience the fast speeds available; however when you buy this sort of routers, you buy for the impressive wireless speeds specs.
Using the 5GHz band is a good feature to have because less products around the house which also works wirelessly like your house cordless phone or if you have wireless mouse like us, it has no issues with interference It also combines two wireless channels thereby improving your wireless performance but that mode would have to be selected and configured.
The TEW-692GR is nothing special design-wise, but what would you expect from a router, you simply needs it to function well, the design is not much of a concern in this scenario. Complete with a glossy-black finish, three external antennas used for the 5-GHz band and series of ten LEDs. One of the LEDs also seems redundant with no apparent use.
Apart from the fast throughput speed on the 5GHz band, it also offered clear difference when compared to our current DLink wireless router supplied by Virgin Media and when tested over long distance the throughput was still impressive. Testing it on the 2.4GHz band was also go although could be beter when compared to other brands of the same price range. Image below shows speedtest.net samples taken from the Trendnet vs the DLink on a 50Mb broadband connection:
Overall, the TEW-692GR performed well and if considered from consumer rather than a techie point of view, it lives up to the hype of 450Mbps as it performs better then what we currently have, however if you get technical and consider the throughput comparison with other wireless routers, it could be better and perhaps a good thing to shop around. We would recommend it for anyone who is looking to boost their signal at home as well as signal quality over long range especially if you have a large house.
