Kai
Starting with Kai. I think he was a green flag throughout the movie. A gentle, honourable and capable man.
Yet never accepted, never recognised, never deemed worthy until the end. Kai's efficiency is not something he takes pride in; it is how he survives. Kai survives by being efficient, better than others, yet invisible. He lives in the periphery and watches, waits, tries to remain unnoticed.
Needless to say, he carries emotional scars heavier than any responsibility taken on his shoulders (certainly heavier than the responsibility I have taken to turn green flags into reds. No one asked for it, though.).
Even when he does take control of his life, it is with the sole purpose to serve, to live the silent vow of loyalty, gratitude and love. Perhaps that's why the ending of the movie is so tragic and yet somehow poetic.
But what if the universe does hear his vow, sees his devotion and the capability of Tengu blood in him? His soul drifts through each lifetime, most times searching and sometimes finding her, and yet losing.
He never has the privilege of a clean slate. The memories come back after a certain age. His soul stained with something mystical, something cosmic.
He remembers the vows each time, and either spends each life searching for her or losing her.
Maybe she passes by him at a crowded place, but he turns with something coiling in his chest a little too late.
Maybe he does find her again, but she is already a happily married woman.
Maybe her soul appears as the man he befriends in another lifetime, and yet their kisses remain under shadows, the world is at war and loving another man is a sin in its eyes. Modernism is just taking root, but sometimes, things simply do not work out. He dies in Kai's arms, blood and gunpowder all over as the war rages on.
Kai remembers each lifetime. He remembers the emptiness of never being able to find his Mika, and the agony of the ones he did find her, but she slipped through—in either death or love, or the tragedy of circumstances.
He remembers the lifetime she was born as a woman, and he was born as a man. He remembers the lifetime they were both men, and he remembers those where he wandered through a long, dragging life, feeling empty within.
And with each life, something rots in his devoted heart, something begins to stretch on and on, until it snaps one final time, when his Mika dies in his arms, and he can do nothing.
Yet finally, it is the present day, and he finds her in an art gallery, staring a the very painting he knows he finished in another lifetime. He remembers the brush strokes, and he remembers the woman he painted. His Mika was married to another in that life, living a rustic and quiet life in the French countryside.
Kai can simply watch as you drift along, slowly moving towards another painting, but something pulls you back as you take a second look at the painting, and sigh, before finally moving to the next painting.
Kai can only watch, frozen in place. Seeing you after so long, after he has searched for you in every face. He has focused on so many eyes, to have that feeling, where he simply knows is his Mika is in front of him. Yet here he stands, even when you are turned away, something in him screams into every corner of his brain- Mika…you are Mika. His Mika.
This time, he vows to bend fate into giving him what has already been his. This time, his love will not end in jagged pieces.
You cannot put into words what you feel, looking at the painting. There is a strange yearning that you have never felt before, yet it does not feel alien to you. Like invisible strings pulling you back, you feel compelled to take another look at the painting.
It must have been a peaceful day. The painting is serene, yet you grow more restless the longer you stare at it.
Something deep stirs in you, and you feel your tongue sticking to the roof of your mouth.
Suddenly, your fingers itch for a pen. You feel you can write odes on the painting. Perhaps this is what artists and collectors feel, and more. Enough to pick out a brush and let the canvas display pieces of themselves in the open.
"1851, A Walk by the Field"
"Huh?" You are startled by a voice behind you.
Turning around, you find a man standing behind. His hair brushed back, his dark beard matching his dark eyes, but as he moves a little, letting light fall on them, they are revealed to be brown – deep dark brown with a perfect fusion of hazel.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to. It's simply my favourite."
"Oh, right, yes, it's deceptively…simple but." You glance at the painting before meeting his eyes again.
"But you feel the emotions."
You can only nod, quietly overwhelmed. He is right, though. This painting, at first glance, seems simple, but it holds something deeper.
Kai refrains from introducing himself to you immediately. No, that will seem too obvious.
Kai is like water; he adjusts, adapts and reflects. Kai's tendencies here turn into potent but dangerous tools.
He owns several art galleries across the country, and the one where he saw you for the first time belongs to him. He has access to the visitor's list and all the information needed already.
Your number, address, and full name. Fed to the right people, and he already is tracking your schedule.
This time, he does not rely on fate, not unless he has absolutely no control over the situation. This time, you bump into him at a museum. That is when he tells you his name. Kai.
His original name was something else. But once the memories began to come back, he decided to honour his origin. Kai. Not even a surname. only Kai. Mika's Kai.
But you do not know this; you do not remember him. To you, he is a kind stranger with dreamy eyes that somehow make you nervous when he looks at you, as if he is looking straight through the skin, flesh and bones and into your soul. When he speaks, it feels like he is addressing something deeper in you, something that resides just out of reach.
Kai. The name stays with you until you meet him again, and his eyes close when he hears you call his name from behind. The way his name rolls off your tongue, to him, it sounds like the sacred offering of flowers to an ancient deity.
From there, almost nothing in your life is a coincidence.
You are looking for another apartment because your landlord is that arsehole who raises rent without notice or gets things fixed when they need to be? Suddenly, you find a perfectly located apartment with a bafflingly low rent.
You think it is a scam, but go to check out the apartment anyway, because what's the harm in looking? You are surprised to find everything pristine and even the documents ready.
The agent looks ready to get it signed up, and that makes you even more suspicious. You obviously do not finalise anything on the first day or the next. But before the third call comes, the electricity supply to your home is cut off.
"Technical issue", they say, but a day stretches to two, and you are growing increasingly frustrated.
The call from the agent comes as a sign from the universe. Your friends, whom you had shown the document pictures, have found nothing wrong with the house. You researched it yourself. Nothing worth suspecting.
It feels like the universe is giving a nudge, and you finally relent, agreeing to see him and sign the documents.
To Kai, it is one of the first steps. You are safe, under his protection and watch. You simply do not know it yet. You would thank him if you knew what a cruel universe you both exist in. The Gods above will take up the strings and pull at them lazily, just to see how far they can toy and test.
You do not have to know the number of cameras inside your new home or the fact that your apartment is bugged.
When you 'accidentally' run into him for the third time, that is when he begins preparations for the second step. integrating himself into your life.
Your friendship blooms with him in coffee shops, museums, shared poetry and the world of art, so new to you, but makes your eyes twinkle in ways no painting orp photgraph can capture in it;s truest form.
The new art gallery that opens nearby? It is owned by Kai.
He slides the opening night pass towards you when you two meet at the usual coffee shop.
He can see the thrill in your eyes even when you deny, and something previously withered blooms in his chest.
Oh, he would give you the world. All he needs to do is be very, very patient.
You have no clue why, but lately, luck has been on your side. First, the apartment, then an art gallery and now an exclusive pass for the opening night because your new friend owns the gallery?
When you step in, dressed in a black one-piece, you are surprised to find a collection you have never seen before.
Multiple paintings and woodblock prints of eighteenth-century Japanese art. They seem to be connected. Woven together into a tale.
'Shijūshichinin Rōnin', as translated into '47-Ronin', is the collection. So they are indeed connected.
But why has your heart sunk with a certain heaviness? Why are your tears threatening to spill? You have no answer to this.
You return after a trip to the bathroom to compose yourself, only to find Kai waiting, overlooking a picture of what seems to be a girl and a boy playing in the woods.
"You know who they are?"
"Kai… and Mika…" The words spill out without your brain even registering them. You frown, bewildered.
Kai looks at you for a long moment. His eyes are fierce yet compassionate, and you find yourself trembling. Not from fear but from a yearning you cannot explain.
"Yes." He nods, "Kai…and his Mika."
"You share his name." Off topic, but you do not know how to dissolve the tension that has turned electric. You feel your lips tingle, and it takes you everything not to let your gaze drop on his lips
And you feel it in your body. Like seasonal blooms weighing down a branch so the flowers can kiss the soil, you feel compelled to step closer to him. You feel compelled to take the hand he offers before he shows you around the gallery, speaking about each painting, and listen to you speaking your mind with all the attention in the world.
And all the while, the world around fades out.
The night ends with you agreeing to meet him once more, in the same gallery, but it will be only you two.
The night you both meet again, an unaddressed tension in the air keeps you on edge. You know it is a date. Everything feels like one. Yet you are afraid to put into words what you find in his eyes.
The tension does dissolve this time. With a fierce kiss that has a sense of finality to it. It feels surreal. Like the ending of a book, where you are the character, and the strings are wrapped around another's fingers.
But his lips are all your mind can think of when he kisses you, and your fingers run through his hair, something you have been waiting to do. Your fingers clutch at his hair just as he holds the back of your neck.
The clothes barely feel like barriers when heat sparks into wildfire.
In the empty gallery, surrounded by art, you two become one. But it feels more than that. It feels like your soul reaching out to trace his, to remember the shape and the warmth and all the different shades and shapes, like it is trying to remember something.
You feel a certain firmness uncoiling. A firmness you never knew existed. Kai is not your first love. You do not even know if you love him. But it feels like you have been waiting for something, and now, the wait is over.
It indeed feels like a kiss that seals one's fate.
Little do you know that your fate has been sealed the moment Kai's eyes met yours.
For Kai, your lips are as soft as the day you slipped away from him for the first time. The day he vowed to search for you in every world, in every life, and love you again.
But this time, there will be no tragedy. He will bind you to him with silk. This time, he will have the strings.
Maybe this has been the universe's twisted game after all— why else would it put you in the very gallery he was in that day?
Maybe, in its own twisted humour, it has proven that even the purest of all love can be corrupted.
Dating Kai is dreamy. You remember all the fairytales you dismissed growing up. Yes, Kai, as a boyfriend, is no less than Prince Charming.
It felt unreal initially. So many times, you have asked yourself if this was some kind of love bombing? If that were the case, you would have chosen to run for the hills while you still had the chance to.
But months into the relationship, you have seen no change in the pattern. It was not even flattery or gifts, or any grand gesture he had been drowning you with. No, it is the sincerest confessions of love, of how important you are to him. It is the way he acts on his words.
You are the priority in his life, and he never forgets to show or remind you that. It is addictive, and you bloom and scatter under his attention.
The quiet nights of whispered promises, teasings and giggles are what make the love creep in your guarded heart.
And the nights that bring heights of ecstasy make you feel on top of the world. Breaths mingling, fingers intertwining, and heat erupting as one between two bodies and setting your world alight.
It is so difficult to observe. Not the kind you do on lazy Sunday mornings, the rare times when you both have more than just the sleepless nights to yourselves. It is so different from lazily mapping his face with your fingertips.
No, you do not observe how you know nothing about Kai's family or his friends. In the months of spring, when the romance is at its arguably best stage, being the centre of his world feels like the natural order of all. The obvious, the norm.
You never question it, but as the seasons change and another spring returns, you see that the honeymoon has not waned, not shifted.
You do not question the way your chest tightens every time you look at a certain Japanese painting. The one with a boy and a girl, blooming into teenagers, playing in the woods. It hangs on the bedroom wall of your shared apartment.
You do not question the small yet apparently shallow circle Kai maintains— small circles are usually intimate. But with Kai, it feels like you alone hold every bit of the softness, admiration and love that blooms in his heart.
You do not question how Kai skirts around the topic of his parents, his lineage—Japanese and British, he has once told you, a bit of Chinese, Portuguese and Hawaiian too.
You have met his mother once, and have come to realise that the topic of his father is not something to be touched with a casual hand.
To an outsider, he seems close to his mother, a loving son to a wonderful woman. But there is this…wall, you have observed. He is loving but never truly vulnerable to her.
You have never questioned the 'weird stories' she spoke of Kai weabing during his teenage years, and the years in therapy he has spent, trying to get his head in the right place. The conversation had irked Kai that night, you remember.
You do not dare to pick up the topic after you have felt the energy shift, long after the dinner. Something had soured during the trip, and the rancid smell lingered throughout, even after your return home.
A year into the relationship, you have begun to pick up the oddities. Questions gnaw at your chest, but the more you suppress them, the more you begin to observe. Truly observe without the veil of love over the eyes.
Why can't you question him, after all?
What makes you hesitate if he is so generous, so gentle, so careful with you, so open and vulnerable?
Is it because it has taken you months to get used to texting him about every place you visit? Even the market? Your workplace to your family.
He worries. A lot. You tell yourself. He has a protective nature. You tell yourself as you send him a quick text before entering your friend's house.
He is just…a little intense. You tell yourself and explain to your friend, who points out that not letting you handle the bigger knives just because you accidentally cut yourself once is not normal.
On your drive back home, you take an unexpected turn for the first time in months and stop by a cafe, without letting Kai know. It feels odd, but the more you sit there and think about it all, your situation is weird.
And yet you are unable to confront Kai about it because it has never been too obvious, anything to direct you to confront it.
You feel like the one rocking the boat. The relationship has been perfect so far. Sure, no relationship can be picture perfect, and so you have been suppressing the urge to question things. That is why you are hesitant to dig deeper.
A cowardly move, you acknowledge that, but well. Now that you have spent…You check your phone—yes, around an hour later, you have some sort of clarity.
Your friend is right. Why do you have to keep it from Kai that you have used the bigger knives? Why must you tell him details about your whereabouts, especially when you visit somewhere as mundane as a convenience store?
You check your phone again. There was a text from Kai about an hour ago, and you have somehow missed it. 'Where are you?', it reads, and you put your phone back.
Why do you feel tense after this? Why do you feel like you are answerable to him?
You stew in your thoughts as much as you can. Long enough for your coffee, half-finished, to sit cold. Long enough for the cafe door to open before Kai walks in.
You are left stunned when Kai approaches your table. Clam as ever.
"You didn't answer my text." He speaks after letting the silence stretch a moment too long. "I was worried." He adds once he's seated in front of you.
"How did you know where I am?"
"You like such cafes."
That is not the explanation. Deep down, you know the reason; you are simply not brave enough at the moment to shatter your illusion of a rosy relationship. But the thing in your heart gnaws harder against the wall, demanding answers.
"There are four more here."
"Your coffee is cold. Why not get something to eat too?"
He tries to divert the topic casually, but you are not having it. "You've been tracking me?"
You see many emotions in his eyes when he looks up from the menu. All except remorse, and that makes you angrier.
"I have been keeping an eye, just in case."
"Just in case what?"
He looks into your eyes for a long moment before sighing, "Just in case, something goes wrong, again."
"Again?" You frown, confused.
"Let's go home, we can talk there, yeah?"
"Kai, I don't understand what you are saying. Have we met before?"
He is already rising from his chair and collecting your bag and phone. You are compelled to follow him out of the cafe.
"Get in the car, I'll have someone else fetch your car." He opens his car door for you, hand on the small of your back, pushing you in.
You open your mouth to protest, only to realise that he has your purse, which in turn has your car keys. He also has your phone. The realisation makes an unexpected chill run down your spine.
It is out of place. It is Kai. What are you so nervous about? Why is your heart beating so fast? You are safe. Of course, you are safe. Why are you having to remind yourself of this?
The brief silence that follows after the car door closes and locks fills your ear with an unending ringing. Your instincts focus towards an immediate exit route, but you are unable to comprehend why.
It is like a war within you. Something in you calms down in Kai's presence, yet that primitive part of the brain that has somehow survived the mellowing of evolution and rings the bells to make you more alert refuses to settle down at times.
"We will get through this. Don't worry. I forgive you."
Forgive you for what? Not telling him that you were headed to a cafe? What is he? Your guardian?
"Kai, stop the car." You request quietly, and then repeat it when he does not attempt to stop it.
"Kai. Stop the car. I can't be with you right now."
"You are stressed. We will get through this. This time, nothing will go wrong; you'll understand once I explain it to you."
That is all the warning you get before you hear the definite click and the car speeds up further.
The picture that has been unfurling all this time turns out to be something disturbing, something twisted, and you are frozen in your seat. You look ahead, blinking away your tears as you begin recounting all the 'oddities' and 'coincidences' so far.
Instances of how he somehow always comes up with plans that overlap with yours? Plans where he is not included, but you have, more than once, chosen him over those plans.
You do not remember being left alone with his mother, even for a moment.
Suddenly, the one time he accidentally called you 'Mika' does not seem so innocuous anymore. You have never been able to take that moment out of your mind.
The dread brewing in your stomach begins to bubble when he pulls up near a villa. His previous home was before he bought an apartment, so you could move in with him. His villa is far from your workplace, and when you used the excuse to decline moving in with him within two months of the relationship, in seven months, he had somehow found the perfect apartment to move into.
Everything that initially felt sweet or coincidental, or things you dismissed as just 'passionate', seems like the red flags you have been ignoring. All because you did not want to rock the boat. You never wanted to rock the boat.
You have been a coward and a fool all along. You come to realise with a sinking feeling in your stomach as the car enters the garage of the villa.
You turn to look for an exit again, still numb somehow. Maybe it is fear, maybe it is a delayed response, maybe it is a survival instinct. But something has shifted.
You remember the night you kissed Kai for the first time. In that gallery, you felt you were both part of the artwork adorning the walls of the place. But now the sense of finality in the kiss seems to coil around your neck, slowly suffocating you, crushing your windpipe.
No, you realise, looking at Kai's set jaws. Not your windpipe. Your freedom, you realise, looking at the auto-locked garage door.

Thanks to @johnwickb1tsch, I added some more headcanons so we get to have a peek into Kai's darkness and how far he is willing to go.
@sweetwolfcupcake has given me kai brainrot. like what if John wick was Kai reincarnated, and helen was a version of his mika?
what about a brzrkr au where unute is a being that lives forever, and he keeps searching for incarnations of mika? what if he always knows where she is but he makes himself avoid her knowing they couldn't resist each other and he's her death sentence until the invention of modern birth control? 👀👀👀
anyway i can't sleep.
I am obsessed with his intense gaze
