im not a silverhand girlie but im in love with the bond between silverv, it's just so perfect and pure I could die
NOBODY expects the Spanish Inquisition. Not even Johnny Silverhand.
Hiya :))
U know i love ur exploration of the interpersonal relationships in Tsh, and I’ve seen u post about cyberpunk 2077, so I wondering if u have any thoughts on the dynamic between v and johnny??
A very vague, broad question I know lol, but what can I say? Ur lovely brain has charmed me, + color me curious about how u played ur v (i chose the nomad life path + tried to foster a good relationship w/ Johnny, myself; I think I got the temperance ending, which from what I’ve seen is pretty common)
Omg thank you so much for those kind words!! Yep, I love CP2077, one of my favorite games of all time.
So I assume you mean my V specifically since V's so highly customizable as a character that I'm not sure what much could be said that would be universally true for all Vs.
Her name is Valerie Locke and she's actually my profile picture. She's a corpo and I have an ongoing fanfiction about her called Secure Your Soul (on ao3) which is an AU based on the concept of "what if V never got fired from Arasaka?" It's the first in a planned two fic series. Johnny is actually also a narrator in that fic, though his first narration chapter doesn't show up until Chapter 13 since the earlier parts are all about how V managed to keep her job and then how she ended up involved in the Konpeki Plaza fiasco (long story short, she got intel that Yorinobu was betraying Arasaka by selling proprietary tech without official sanction, and she went there on the job to gather proof).
Thus far that's the only chapter in which V and Johnny interact, and it's not exactly... in the way you might expect? I'm trying not to spoil too much in case you actually want to read it, but... basically, certain things are different. Not necessarily in the sense of being less canon-compliant... it's hard to explain without just outright spoiling it. 🤣
As for their dynamic... they're essentially bitter enemies experiencing forced empathy who also have identical fatal flaws (stubbornness). But they're stubborn about completely different things.
Valerie Locke is extremely loyal to Arasaka and very much a "typical corpo". She's intelligent, cool-headed, charismatic, and ruthless without being wasteful (as in, she'd prefer to settle matters without unnecessary casualties not because of moral reasons but because she thinks it's more practical that way, but at the end of the day, she will always do whatever it takes to accomplish her mission). She's also ironically an extremely optimistic person and kind of an adrenaline-junkie. She's loyal to Arasaka not because of duty or for the money but because she deeply enjoys her job. She's in it for the love of the game. Her loyalty has a ton of genuine enthusiasm behind it.
Johnny is... Johnny. He's canon Johnny, though obviously it's my particular take on him so it's naturally gonna be colored by my own unique viewpoints. I've read a lot of the Cyberpunk TTRPG materials (I'm a huge, huge TTRPG fan), and I think Mike Pondsmith is an incredible writer and really, really wish he wrote more fiction. I'm a big fan of all of his short stories about Johnny and the other characters who play a significant role in his life (Alt, Rogue, Kerry, Spider, etc.). I suppose this is technically a spoiler, but I bring a lot of that lore to the fic. So it's canon Johnny based both on the game and the TTRPG lore. He's fundamentally the same character; they actually did a really good job of staying true to the lore in the video game (that's a big part of why the game's so good). But it's a more comprehensive and expanded view of him.
So Johnny and my V, naturally, have extremely incompatible personalities and pretty much diametrically opposed goals. There are certain traits they very distinctly have in common, and they are almost all ones that make their relationship more antagonistic rather than less. They also share a brain. They can feel each other's emotions as if they are their own. They can remember each other's memories as if they actually experienced them. So... imagine what experiencing that would be like for two people who not only hate each other but see each other as a manifestation of everything in life they most stand against. And then (*Trent Reznor voice*) the line begins to blur. That's them. In a nutshell, anyway.
Oh, this isn't entirely related, but I also have a series of Cyberpunk 2077 playlists, and I have one that's technically based on the relationship between Johnny and V in the canon Devil Ending, but it also works really well for songs to describe my V and Johnny in general.
don't talk to me i'm still processing this beautiful ending
taking my beautiful princess with a disorder on a ride
I both love and cry for this ending
