Whatever Brains – Whatever Brains (Sorry State)
Just to clarify, in case you hadn't already assumed, this is for the 4th and last album by Whatever Brains...since they continued with the cruel choice of not naming any of their records. With that said, the last effort from this group happens to be the weirdest and wildest, a fantastically proper way to go out, regardless at how it is received. It's been an interesting ride for the band that started out with a rather unassuming punk sound, but have morphed into a warped experimental post-punk beast. It's crazy to think that they ended up in the same head space as a band like Sightings, relying heavily on monotonous swirls of humming electronics backed with the churn of pulsating decaying beats. Whatever Brains' approach isn't as harnessed in an apocalyptic fallout setting, but sits within an atonal low-end space that is likely more violent with its jabs and shares similar skin crawling tactics to that of Pere Ubu and some of the better Spray Paint material. It's a shame I didn't get to hear this one until the new year, because it was certainly worthy of some year end praise. If some of you are still out there trying to scramble and catch up on last year...then please by all means do not overlook this one. Whatever Brains - Coasting (stream) BUY IT!
