It seemed that his mother’s affair was not the only secret that was kept from Christopher. While Christopher took it upon him to look for his book, he went to his father’s room hoping to find his book. Christopher, however, found something else. The truth that his father kept from him was revealed to him through the letters that was sent to him by his mom. Too shocked to accept anything of it, Christopher vomited all his disappointment. To make things even worse, his father decided to be honest with his son and tell him everything including the fact that he killed Wellington with the excuse that Mrs. Shears cared about him more than Christopher or his father. Christopher’s father words had the opposite effect of what they were meant for. The truth didn’t help in anyway except making Christopher scared from his father that he decided to run away taking Toby along with him.
In chapter 179, Christopher faces the fact that he has to make a decision. Being the person he is, Christopher lists all his options, and starts eliminating each one that seems impossible for him to do. Christopher options were:
Living with Sobian. Christopher didn’t think that was acceptable because he thought that it wasn’t one of her duties to care of him outside the school due to the fact that she wasn’t a family member, and so she was considered as a stranger.
Living with Mrs. Alexander. Even though Christopher had some conversations with her including the one about his mom’s affair, she was still considered as a stranger, so Christopher didn’t want to live with her and use anything in her house.
Living with Mrs. Shears. This options was the one that Christopher stilled with at first. To Christopher, Mrs. Shears was not a stranger and he had stayed with her before, so it was okay if he lived with her. Christopher also believed that if he told her that his father was the one who killed Wellington, she would consider him as a friend and allow him to stay with her since she will understand why he couldn’t live with his dad anymore. However, this option was eliminated due to the fact that Mrs. Shears didn’t open the door when Christopher knocked on it.
Going back home and living with his father. This option however wasn’t a one that Christopher was fond of, especially at this moment. The thought of living with someone who killed scared Christopher a lot that it caused his heart beat fast and his legs to shake. It seemed that Christopher wasn’t able to get over that fact that his dad killed Wellington.
Staying in the garden. This option wasn’t a good one either. Other than the fact that the weather was freezing and the ground wasn’t comfortable, it was a place near his dad which means that he eventually will find Christopher. Having this thought made Christopher feel sick again, and thus it was eliminated as well.
Going to with Uncle Terry. First of Uncle Terry lived in Sunderland and Christopher had no idea at all how to get there, so this option wasn’t really an option. Add to that the fact that Uncle Terry wasn’t really Christopher best type of people. Christopher didn’t like Uncle Terry because he smoked cigarettes and he ruffled Christopher’s hair which means that he made Christopher uncomfortable because he doesn’t like anyone to touch him, even if he liked them.
Going to live with his mother in London. This was Christopher last option and to him it seemed as the best option at the moment. Christopher seemed to more fond of his mother more than his dad at the moment. He also remembered that address from the letter that he read, so it wouldn’t really be hard to get there, so Christopher settled with his option.
After making up his mind, Christopher decided to leave Toby with Mrs. Alexander since the trip was long and he didn’t want to take a risk and lose him in the train. However, he was forced to take him with him because ran away when Mrs. Alexander mentioned calling up his father and Christopher didn’t want that. Christopher went back home and took things that he needed for the journey including his father credit card. He decided since he was familiar with the train station that he will use the train to go to London. Christopher paid a visit to his school in an attempt to ask Christopher about the way to the train station, but he was welcomed with his dad’s van in front of the school, so he decided to find the way on his own and he did.
