New City Gas Fuels New Life in Montreal's Griffintown
I strongly believe Montreal has been craving something different, something nobody has done yet in our city; cue New City Gas’ entrance on the Montreal 5 à 7 and event scene. As you stroll in a part of Montreal you probably didn’t even know existed, you’ll cross the most recent constructions in Griffintown, their cranes and the new breed of young professionals heading out of their trendy condos. Don’t let the gravel deter you, a true gem awaits you. When the massive industrial-looking New City Gas building will appear in front of you in the middle of a seemingly abandoned area, you’ll wonder why you even listened to a random blogger. “It looks old”, you’ll think, but I urge you to press on. You might hear the reverberation of the bass from the music emanating from the tall brick structure and feel the history of the building fill the air. As soon as you’ll set foot inside, you’ll be welcomed by a big bar, waiting to quench your thirst. It’s currently cash only so make sure you have some moulah on you; you’ll be there a while.
The incredibly high ceilings, brick walls and beams will make you feel like you stepped into a factory. This is quite accurate considering New City Gas, built in the mid-1800’s, was used to transform coal into gas, in order to light Montreal. Now, it’s lit up from within with colorful spots along the walls and it's outfitted with lounging couches. You’ll keep walking towards the end of the building, passing the interestingly styled bathroom with its huge communal sink. You’ll squint at the sight of the light at the end of the tunnel and hear the loud jibber jabber of the crowd of attractive young professionals, chilling on and under the partially covered two-storey terrace, which is encased within more high, brick walls. You’ll perch yourself on the second floor, sway to the music and take in the scene unfolding below you. Perhaps you'll stay at ground level close to the bar or boys, you might want to stand below the staircase and look up sheepishly (you’ll thank me later). Also serving as a concert hall, it has already welcomed some of the biggest DJs in the world like David Guetta, Tiesto and Moby. The revamp of this historical Montreal landmark, its breathtaking architecture and its ambiance will most certainly impress you and satisfy any craving for a new and original party place in Montreal. I'm definitely hoping it'll eventually be open for some weekly weekend partying with local DJs, in addition to the current Thursday evenings (the only weekday it's open). In the meantime, here’s to a long, fun summer of Thursday 5 à 7s at New City Gas, and an even longer life to this spectacularly unique venue!

Update: I've gone a few times over the course of the summer and it most certainly is THE summer hot spot for Thursday 5 à 7s! You can be indoors or outdoors, depending on what you like. And, how can you not love a place that sometimes has a food truck waiting for you before you head home? Saturdays offer a completely different party vibe with great DJ lineups. I'm a big fan. Love it there!

Office 5 à 7
On Friday, we had a little 5 à 7 hosted by none other than Rose, the office Boxer
I tried my hardest to mingle with my office mates but my internal dialogue from start to finish looked an awful lot like this:
MY ONLY HOBBY IN LIFE IS DOGS. I DON’T CARE ABOUT PEOPLE OR ANY OF THE MANY THINGS IN THIS UNIVERSE SUCH AS HAIRSPRAY OR GRANOLA BARS OR CUPBOARDS. I ONLY CARE ABOUT DOGS. SOMETIMES WHEN I GET TO A PARTY AND I SEE THAT SOMEONE HAS BROUGHT THEIR DOG ALONG, I’LL PRETEND THAT I’M A CAREFREE INDIVIDUAL WHO BARELY NOTICES THE DOG, BUT ON THE INSIDE I’M TOTALLY FREAKING OUT BECAUSE THERE IS A DOG IN THE SAME ROOM AS ME AND I’M NOT PLAYING WITH HIS FLOPPY EARS. EVENTUALLY, AFTER A FEW DRINKS, I FINALLY GET UP THE COURAGE TO ABANDON MY DISGUISE AS A NORMAL HUMAN BEING AND CEASE ALL HUMAN INTERACTION TO SPEND MY ENTIRE NIGHT PLAYING WITH THE DOG.

When Art Meets Phillips Lounge

Whenever I go to Phillips Lounge, I feel like I’m hanging out at a friend’s trendy condo in the heart of downtown: it’s cozy yet stylish and you don’t have to take your shoes off to preserve the hardwood floors or help do the dishes. One side of the lounge features stools surrounding the bar, communal tables and more intimate tables, with lights emanating from within the tables and bars giving everyone a colorful hue. Massive pieces of colorful art work hang on the walls to really cinch in that artsy feel they’re going for. The second side of the lounge has more of a gallery feel with its booths all around the dark grey walls that are once again adorned with large and colorful pieces of art, making it the perfect setting for a corporate event. We happened to be there on a Thursday and the place was filled with a diverse, professional crowd either drinking and/or eating after a long day of work while vibing to DJ’s amazing R&B beats. With its different drink specials during the week and extensive cocktail list, Phillips is a great little loungy gem for that elusive date night, 5 à 7 night or “I don’t know where to hang out in this city” night.
