Amid the myriad problems facing the SFMTA, it's nice to see a bright spot in the 5 and 5R.
Overall, the 5 Fulton and the 5R Fulton Rapid are a Muni Forward success story. To date, improvements that span from La Playa to Market Street have resulted in a 60 percent increase in ridership from 14,000 in 2009 to 21,000 daily passengers today (equating to over 9,000 added daily boarding’s). The safety improvements constructed reduced the collision rate by almost 40 percent on the route.
We have made a number of transit improvements to the 5 Fulton line over the last 10 years including:
2009 we extended evening service to Transbay Terminal.
2011 McAllister was converted to a two-way street saving three minutes on the average trip.
2013 we launched the 5 Fulton Rapid service that reduced travel times along McAllister by up to seven minutes for the Rapid riders and reduced crashes on Fulton between Masonic and Shrader.
2015 increased frequency during rush hours and mid-day to reduce crowding.
2016 introduced 60’ buses on the 5R to reduce crowding.
2017-2018 implemented capital changes to reduce transit travel time along the corridor including installing bus bulbs at Rapid stops, traffic signals at various locations on Fulton (west of Park Presidio and east of Arguello) and McAllister.
These improvements have resulted in a 60 percent increase in ridership, equating to over 9,000 added daily boardings.
Extending the sidewalk with bus bulbs, so buses only have to pull over slightly, save times by allowing buses to quickly board passenger and move on, without pulling out of traffic and trying to merge back in. As everyone knows, buses often pull over only partially, leaving the outer lane blocked anyway.
This coming Saturday – February 25, 2017 – the SFMTA is making minor changes on several lines. Several stop will be consolidated, the 28R will now stop at Balboa Park, the 5-Fulton local will switch from 40 ft to 60 ft buses, and several lines will see frequency increases. However, a few will see decreases.
Transit officials will reduce frequency on several Muni lines, including the F-Market/Wharves line during the morning and afternoon.
Erica Kato, deputy spokesperson for the SFMTA, said of the reduction of the F service:
“In recent months we have experienced terminal crowding and unreliability on the F line. We are implementing a slight reduction in service in the morning and afternoon to address these issues.”
Frequency changes on the F-line are not unexpected. With the launch of the E-Embarcadero line as a full-time service, ridership patterns were certain to change and require some fine tuning, but it's the Castro end where it turns out they are having issues.

Bigger, longer, accordion-style electric trolley buses are coming to Muni’s 5-Fulton rapid line starting Aug. 15.
The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency said it is switching out the 40-foot electric trolleys — which currently serve the 5R-Fulton — with 60-footers to deal with overcrowding on the route.
On-time performance on the 5R-Fulton Rapid has been declining as ridership, and the crowding with it, has grown. Just one of 60 ft trolley-buses can carry 112 passengers more passengers than the current 40 ft buses.
Other improvements rolling out later this fall on the 5R route includes traffic signals, traffic circles and pedestrian improvements on Fulton and McAllister streets between Cole and Larkin streets. The improvements are part of the 5-Fulton Rapid Project.
The SFMTA is in the process of replacing the entire Muni bus fleet, with over 400 buses currently on order.
Earlier this year the SFMTA placed the order for 33 additional 60 ft buses, an option included in the contract for the first 60 of the 60 ft Xcelsior-class trolley-buses, all of which have arrived. The SFMTA is preparing to exercise another option for 240 40’ trolley-buses, with the entire fleet replaced by the end of 2019.
For nearly 10 years, the SFMTA has been investing in service improvements for 5 Fulton riders. From launching 24-hour service on the 5 Fulton in 2007 to launching Rapid service along the route in 2013, we’re committed to improving service every day. And this August, we’re at it again, adding bigger buses to the 5R Fulton Rapid!
Since opening the 5R combined ridership on the Fulton lines has grown 17%, making those longer buses long overdue.
Starting August 15, 60-foot articulated electric trolley buses will begin running weekdays on the 5R Fulton Rapid to reduce crowding. These new buses also offer a smoother, more comfortable ride. Adding bigger buses is one of the key upgrades rolling out this August as part of our ongoing Muni Forward service improvements.
The SFMTA has a list of all the wins so far. Street and sidewalk projects underway now are starting to wrap up and will further improve safety (for everyone who shares the road) and further cut down travel times on Muni.

The SFMTA Board of Directors today approved a package of upgrades on McAllister Street to improve pedestrian safety and speed up buses on the 5-Fulton line as part of Muni Forward. Among the changes, two stop signs will be replaced with transit-priority traffic signals, and two others will be replaced with traffic circles.
The project is expected to shave 20 percent off travel times along the route, which goes from the Outer Richmond to downtown
The newly approved changes are the second phase of the Fulton Street Rapid Project, which began two years ago with launch of the 5L-Fulton Limited (now the 5R-Fulton Rapid) and cut travel times of the 5 by 15% and attracted 2,000 new riders.
