Day 225

Today is Darwin's birthday.

1. Worked out pretty hard core today. Exhausted.

2. Drove all over town to get gifts to combine into one super gift for Darwin. Wrapping them was.. alright.

3. Panic ensued while trying to coordinate plans with Kerry. She totally didn't want the surprise to fall through. Tried my best to not mess up!

4. Dinner with a giant group of friends. At first it was just Darwin and Jonathan. Small pathetic party of three became a giant blob of awesome. SURPRISE! YEAH!

5. After a bit of indecision we had BP at Steven's house.

Don't think I cannot see your shifting eyes. It's totally fine. I've my just desserts. You looked great tonight, like always. See you next life.

Josh Hess becomes fourth Eagle in family

By Gary Towner Obtaining the rank of Eagle Scout is a tremendous achievement for any scout. It's even more of an honor for Josh Hess, of Warsaw, who became the fourth Eagle in his family last weekend. 

“I want to thank you all for being here,” Josh said. “It’s really an honor to be up with my three brothers now – all Eagle Scouts – (I) thank my parents for being there, encouraging me, making sure I went back after we lost all our scoutmasters, several in a row.  I want to thank Mr. McGuire for coming through when no one else really did.  He really kept the troop going along with all the other leaders that joined up.” 

It takes 21 badges to become an Eagle, and Josh has earned a total of 32.  For his community project, he remodeled the bowling alley in the Warsaw Masonic temple. Josh also encouraged the other scouts to work for their Eagle award. 

“It’s not easy, it won’t be easy, but you all have the ability to do it, and you can achieve this,” he said.

Josh was also presented with four other awards. David Spears, master of Masonic Lodge 549, F&AM, the chartered organization, presented a plaque of accomplishment from the Masons. Commander Dan Walzak from Walter Klein Post 532 awarded a citation from the American Legion, and Linda Hollister representing Assemblyman Dan Burling’s office presented a congratulatory letter from the State of New York and a Certificate of Merit from the New York State Assembly.

Hess’s family was justifiably proud.  His mother, Pam, said “I’m very excited and very proud.  I couldn’t be prouder of all four boys.” 

His father, Joseph, agreed.

“I’ve got four great boys, and I’m real proud of them all, and we’ve got four Eagles, and I’m proud of them.” 

His four brothers also expressed their pride.

 “It’s just good to have everyone being a top rank, and it feels good to have all four of us here,” Matt said.

Steuben Trust opens Warsaw location

By Maria R. Hayes On Tuesday, May 22, angry thunderstorms rolled through Warsaw, drenching the streets with a deluge of rain. But like something out of a fairytale, the clouds cleared and the sun came out that evening for the opening of the new Steuben Trust Company location in Warsaw.

Officials from Steuben Trust, the town of Warsaw and the Wyoming County Chamber gathered with members of the community to cut the blue ribbon and welcome the bank to Warsaw.

The new, full-service office will incorporate personal service with electronic banking alternates, as well as a drive-up teller and ATM services. The bank offers consumer, mortgage, commercial and agricultural lending, as well as trust and investment services. It also allows Steuben Trust to be closer to some of its current customers.

“We are pleased to be opening our newest branch in the community of Warsaw,” said Brenda Copeland, Steuben Trust Company’s president and CEO. “This is a convenient location for our customers, and this new branch opening is part of STC’s continued commitment to providing outstanding service to residents of the greater Wyoming County area and investing in our local communities.”

The new location’s hours are Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Saturday, 9 a.m. to noon. An ATM and safe deposit boxes are also available.

The first Steuben Trust Company office was built in the former Babcock State Building on Main Street in Hornell in 1902, when it was known as the Bank of Steuben. Its name changed to the Steuben Trust Company in 1920 after it began offering trust services. The company continued to expand and currently operates offices in Steuben, Allegany, Livingston, Monroe and Wyoming counties.
