Project two on a 1999 GMC YUKON. After replacing the spark plugs, I had come across a tale of signs.
This was a spark plug out of known cylinder for throwing a frequent misfire. Prior owners said it had higher compression told to them by mechanics, and were never fully investigated by their "trusted" mechanics, almost as if they were convincing the prior owners it's just normal.
Needless to say, if you ever have a misfire on any cylinder, don't lose sleep and look a little deeper. Your vehicle is a lot easier to diagnose when it's not running up to par than you think.
First signs of a bad spark plug: rough idle, engine shake, trouble starting up. Pull them out and compare their colors.
There are lots of informative videos on YouTube about what your spark plugs mean by color and corrosion. Watch at least one. Spark plug ware on combustible engines are universal ways your engine can tell you it's not feeling well.
Here you have a dark black build up, and due to heavy combustion in the combustion chamber, the explosions from the fuel injector source even ruptured the plastic tubing down the whole core of the spark plug.
Put two and two together and for some (actually pretty relative) reason there was too much fuel going into said cylinder combustion chamber, causing a very stressful scenario for the cylinder.
When this is discovered, it's more than just a proper tune up issue. Don't just replace your spark plugs, investigate deeper.
What's deeper? Well what causes combustion? Fuel. Next step, remember how the spark plug was black and blown up (the white plastic severed in the spark plug is designed to dampen current flow of electricity)? It's a problem beyond the spark plug.
In the picture above is the engine intake manifold, if you take it off just go ahead and clean it and change the gaskets.
Take it off to access the fuel injector assembly, below. (YouTube will assist you in this thoroughly)
Your fuel injection assembly is the spider like object in the center, with what appears to be tubes running into the engine. That is your original manufactured fuel injection assembly. Replace this and your problem will be solved.
Below is a much updated and recommended replacement. It's a multi-port fuel injection system, YouTube the specific vehicle it is being replaced for and enjoy the hard work. The accuracy of your fuel injection will lengthen the life of your engine greatly.
All in all at the end of it, say you get your mechanic to replace it or you replace it, be very aware that the harsh conditions that said cylinder was under due to a bad fuel injector leaking to much or too little could've created a very thick amount of build up in your cylinder which could ultimately be the death of your engine. I recommend going ahead a step further and cleaning the inside of your cylinders thoroughly and replacing your piston rings. That's probably why they didn't inform the prior owners of the leaky fuel injector, more money for them if they decided to bring it back in for an engine diagnosis after it crapped the bucket on them.
After replacing mine with a much updated MPI fuel injection assembly, it runs much smoother than I imagined it would.
