Colour Negative Film

Shooting colour negative film has never been a really enjoyable process for me. Don’t get me wrong, I love shooting with film. But somehow colour negative film in 35mm just doesn't click with me. It is not so bad in medium format, maybe since it has more space to record all the colours and tones. But in 35mm... Man I have been struggling for so long getting them colours right. It gets worse with a new Epson Scanner software for the V800 that's making it harder to scan. Too bad I only have expired Kodak Portra 160 and 0 Tri-X in my fridge. Popped one into the Leica R8 and off I went praying for the best.

Got the film developed at Ruby Photo and have been struggling since last Saturday trying to get the colours right. I am quite pleased with how this orchid turned out. I know its not perfect, whites are blown out (learning how to meter with the R8) and it is a bit out of focus (shot wide open at f2 and very close probably ~0.6m). But the colour looks accurate enough to me. Time to use the remaining 8 rolls left to practice. Who knows if I will end up liking Portra more than my favourite Provia.

Shooting in Japan - Part 2

One of my favourite places to shoot in Tokyo is the inner Tsukiji Market. It looks really cinematic when shot using slide films. Unfortunately the area has since moved to Toyosu and I am not sure if it will be the same photographing there.

Some of the stall owners actually look quite intimidating but they are fine with having their picture taken as long as you don't get in their way. If you do then... Good luck.

Japan is so interesting and I always have a hard time deciding what gear to bring there. I have never gone there with just a single camera body and lens. Wonder if it is something that I should try this October. I guess I will survive with the M4, 35 lux and only Provia. However, I will be missing out on the glorious portraits that could come out of the Hasselblad Zeiss 80mm with Pro400H . Help! What should I do!!!

Or should I just bring the Hasselblad with two lenses - the 50mm (wide angle) and 80mm (normal)? I just can’t decide!!! Whatever it is, shooting in Tsukiji is really exciting and hopefully there will be something left for me when I am there.
