Procopius’ Sea Monster
For hundreds of years, scientists thought the giant, ship-sinking, man-eating monster described by the Byzantine historian Procopius was pure fantasy.

That was, until some time ago when researchers discovered that sperm whales do indeed deliberately attack ships, for example to defend their herd, although this is rare. It was also said that they would eat humans if they came near them. But there is no proof of this yet. Moby Dick is closer to reality than many believe: Sperm whales can grow up to 26 metres long and weigh over 63 tonnes and have therefore inspired a number of monster legends.
