Women’s 1960′s fashion was extreme style and attitude from the start of the decade to the end. In the early years, the fashion idol was Jackie Kennedy with her perfectly white pearls and tailored suit dresses. By the the middle of the decade, supper model Twiggy had women freeing their minds and bodies into clothing that didn’t require any extra thought or effort. From modest to “there is no such thing as too short,” 1960′s fashion was in many ways like the 1920′s flapper revolution. But it didn’t happen overnight.

What we wear tells a lot about a culture. The 1950's-1960's was essentially a time of conformity. You won’t find anything wild or risqué on any article of clothing. Think of it as good, clean, wholesome stuff, conservative and restrained; certainly, more classic in style and design. Individuals dressed very conservatively, especially women, who were deemed to wear "smartly". Dresses were all about good grooming and a tailored look, wherein such attributes were prized. Acting and looking “every inch the lady” was taught virtually from the cradle and wearing a dress was a given. Style icons for women in this timeline were Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn.
