Bizzarrini SpA was founded in Livorno by the talented Italian engineer Giotto Bizzarrini, who previously worked on sports cars Alfa Romeo, Ferrari and Iso Rivolta. In 1964 he created the Iso Grifo A3 / C racing prototype and decided to launch it into series production. In order not to share the profit with Renzo Rivolta, Bizzarrini renamed the supercar Bizzarrini 5300 GT. In 1966, a second smaller model, the Bizzarrini Europa, appeared. Having invested all the funds in high-tech development and participation in Le Mans, Bizzarrini was unable to properly organize the business and went bankrupt in 1969, having produced less than 200 cars. In the 90s and 2000s. Several concepts were built under the Bizzarrini brand, but none of them went on sale.

This supercar was designed by engineer Giotto Bizzarrini for Iso Rivolta and was originally called the Iso Grifo A3 / C. Structurally, the car was a continuation of the 1963 Iso Rivolta production model, which had a monocoque instead of a separate chassis, double wishbone front suspension and a DeDion rear axle.

Bizzarrini only shortened the wheelbase to 2,450mm and propelled the Chevrolet V8's 5.4-liter engine as far away from the front axle as possible to ensure optimal weight distribution. Then he turned to the designer Giorgetto Giugiaro, then at the Bertone studio, and the result of their collaboration was one of the most beautiful Italian cars of the 60s.

Bizzarrini created the Grifo A3 / C for endurance racing, and he had a hard time convincing Renzo Rivolta, a supporter of moderate 2 + 2 sports cars, to fund his project. However, during its debut at the Turin Motor Show in 1963, the Grifo A3 / C prototype was admired and sold immediately, then the American Ed Hughes ordered such a car to participate in the 12-hour race in Sebring.

The creation of Bizzarrini was predicted to have a successful racing career, but in 1964 the first races at Sebring, and then at Le Mans, turned out to be a failure due to problems with the gearbox and brakes. The most that the Iso Grifo A3 / C has achieved is first place in its class at the 1965 24 Hours of Le Mans.

In 1965, relations between Bizzarrini and Rivolta deteriorated. Bizzarrini considered the Iso Grifo A3 / C his personal project, so he decided to launch it into series production under the Grifo brand, but Rivolta retained the trademark rights. Since the cars had previously been assembled at the Prototipi Bizzarrini factory in Livorno, Bizzarrini simply renamed the model Bizzarrini 5300 GT.

Although Giugiaro was responsible for the styling of the Bizzarrini 5300 GT, the bodies were made from aluminum by Piero Drogo in Modena and later by Carrozzeria BBM. The extremely low and streamlined supercar body with a sloping roof and wavy waistline is still considered the standard of grace.
