16/566 - Do Income Tax from Past Years

Before doing this I had never done taxes before. I have had a job since I was 14 years old officially. I had worked with my Dad before that but it was alway cash under the table and I always was spending it on model cars and pointless crap. It was not the best way to spend my money, but not the point of the story. The story is and why it is on my list of things to do is because before doing it I had never done it. I had over 4 years of back taxes to do. It ended up being a great bonding night with my sister, she taught me how to do it and I got a bit of money back. Its just one of those adult things to do.

62/566 Get on LinkedIn

I have been on LinkedIn for more than a couple years, but it was more of just a online resume when I first was looking for jobs early last year. But more recently I have been activity looking on it for new about businesses I follow. It may not at first be the universal place to find content. But it does a couple things well: 1. shows me when someone looks at my portfolio and that just creates an awesome personal boost. 2. Allows me to follow the business side of people I know and what is going on in their own lives. 3. Allows me to see what is going on in business/marketing for certain places. 

LinkedIn has been inquired by Microsoft but it will continue to run as its own company. For now it is the best place for lead generations, connecting for new jobs and following business people that you want to keep in touch with. 

If you considering a very technology directed job in the future I would recommend getting on their for constant exposure to the environments. I get about a new email or view a week which is a pretty comfortable amount of awareness for me. For right now though I am more focused on personal learning than seeking new jobs... for now.

188/566 Create My Dream Work Space

Now for some of you, this might not matter. But I have came out of having a small 13″ Macbook back in 2007 to a good set up. I currently have an external monitor for my Macbook Pro and still my iMac. My desk is very organized and not cluttered with devices, the desk is an ‘L’ shape so I have max space for everything. 

Why is was on the list original was because I always dreamed about having a huge desk, a big area with technology surrounding me and now I do. For my work station at work even I have a huge 27″ iMac that I use along with a Macbook Pro. I use Macs 100% of my day.

432/566 Ought to See Jurassic World

This was a later addition with the 3.0 update. I added this movie because it was a summer blockbuster and it got a pretty good review and I never saw it.

I have seen all the previous movies and I loved them all, they were a unique story line with science, adventure and dinosaurs all rolled up into one. I really did enough this movie, and I would watch it again for sure. I really really liked the scenes that went back into the old Jurassic Park, and using the jeeps and event the shirt ‘Jurassic Park’ got featured. And to continue on the story line of how many years it has been since the original was really cool too. 

All in all I would highly recommend you to watch it, and it would be pretty good to even watch in sequence with each movie, even though there is not that much of connection between them, this does fall inline with them even if its a completely different title and different story line, still the same island!

Would I Watch this Film Again: Strongly Yes

232/566 Lynda.com Foundation of Typography

This was one things I have wanted to get into for quite some time but have never found a way to enter this. Type is cool, some type I have been able to stare at and look into the shape and experience it creates. And sometimes I look at type and I think to myself “Why is this type pulling me in, and why have a been staring at it for this long” 

There is a lot that this video covers, its about 2 hours and it covered a lot of things about type and how to display type when working on any design project. A couple highlights were learning about all the Anatomy of type just like how humans have anatomy, type also has. I learnt about serifs and san-serif and how everything determine how the type is portrayed. 

Everything that effects type: the shape, the weight, the width between letters, the slope if present, the line heights to the next line of letters, the mechanical look of the letter and the readability of type.

Type is cool, design is cool and this opened a door with type.

512/566 Ought to See - The Words

‘Words can inspire. And words can destroy. Choose yours well’ - Quote from the movie.

This movie did not get as much reaction as I thought it would when it came out, it has been a couple years and I have only recently sat down to watch it. The trailer when it first got released gave me hint that it would already be a very lesson and quotable movie, and I was correct. 

Rotten Tomato only gave it 23% which I think is just dumb since the story line is engaging and the lesson ties into the story very well. I was not bored at all and I was very curious the whole movie. The storyline was actually brilliant if you ask me. A story inside a story told by the author. 

I would highly recommend this movie to anyone, some more quotes that really caught my eye:

‘You can’t erase the past, no matter how much you want to’

‘We all make choices in life. The hard thing is to live with them’

‘We are going to be fine’ -- is the last line in the movie, its a pretty great ending if you ask me.

484/566 Go on a Segway

While I was in California, I decided to do some things that I thought would be cool outside of the WWDC ‘15, so obviously I went on a Segway tour of San Francisco. We started at the Pier and went down the coast and then up into the city to the highest peak in the city centre and then finished again at the Pier. 

At first it was a bit strange to get on and off, but after a couple park jobs, I had the hang of it. They are very convenient little machines to go around the city. The tour lasted a couple hours, and I got to see the city in a new way, a way I probably wouldn’t have been able to since it was only a week there and we covered a lot in only a couple hours.

110/566 Update my iPad

Originally when the first and second iPads came out, I was going to collect them. I decided against it, and have been working on an iPad 2 since 2011. Recently in the last year, I had been using my iPad slowly everyday and now a day doesn't go by without me picking it up and using it. 

When I originally put this on, I thought I was going to buy the next model and call it a day, however it has been a long time since I got one. At first I didn't justify it, I couldn't because the iPad 2 isn't that bad. However lately it has been crashing a lot more and speed wise I knew I couldn't put the application I am coding right now on them. Testing on a device that the specs are 4 years old is like running a coal ran vehicle into a sport car party, it just wouldn't look good. 

I got the new iPad Air 2, 0.96 pounds with Touch ID, this is my first iPad with retina display and it looks awesome, like I find myself just staring at no pixels and how crisp it looks sometimes. Anyways, capacity is 128GB so that I can take it with me to Toronto if I a) get a job there or b) take trips and want to bring movies and tv shows with me.
