In 1820 some people in Charleston began a movement to spread the Gospel among the sailors and the following year incorporated as the Charleston Port Society and built the “Mariners Church” at Church and Water Streets. When Harriott Pinckney passed away in 1866, she left the land at the corner of East Bay and Market Streets for “a church building for the worship of God requesting that “the seats of such church shall be appropriated to the free use of seamen frequenting the port of Charleston.”

In 1916 The Church Of The Redeemer and The Harriot Pinckney Home for Seaman was constructed.

By the 1950’s the port had moved further north on the peninsula and made it difficult to for the sailors to get to the church. It was deconsecrated many years later. Eventually it was opened as a restaurant and bar space and today is home to 5 Church.

5 Church is one of the stops on the Saturday Morning Cocktail Crawl with Charleston Bachelorettes. This is such an amazing spot in Charleston. 5 Church has nine signature cocktails and we stop in to sample the most popular, the “Ready Orgeat.” They serve lunch and dinner.
