This essay is part of the Animation Business Project #1, which asked me to envision how a company might be that I would like to set up myself, prospectively.
As interesting as working in a big animation studio sounds, I sometimes fancy the idea of being my own boss. And the one of others, maybe.
After some time in the business, I might consider founding my own animation studio.
What tempts me most is the power to select the projects myself. Of course, I am aware that sometimes jobs must be taken for financial purposes, but generally I would very much like to realise projects that really matter to me.
I would sum up my personal emphasis as ‘information and education’. I am hugely interested in visualising information in order to make them more easily accessible to people. This contains both simplifying things for less prepared audiences and depicting complex topics that are just hard to imagine for professional recipients. Also, contributing to children’s perception of their environment is a matter very near to my heart.
The themes I would like to cover therefore reach from science to social to ecological issues likewise.
If the company went well, I would like to gather a team around me, that includes an illustrator, a sound artist, a 3D animator and further designers and animators. First, it will be necessary to appoint people for the work that I myself cannot do, but would be beneficial for the intended outcome. Illustrations and sound are crucial to animation and 3D would add up very well for visualising science topics. It is something I am only just about to learn.
With the growth of the studio, I would probably like to withdraw from the actual implementation process and rather act as a director or concentrate on creating contents or scripts. To work along a producer with experiences in winning clients, raising budgets and staying within them, would be great.
However, I would like my team to feel equally involved in a production and keep hierarchies as flat as possible for the process. I prefer a creative atmosphere, where everyone from the boss to the trainee is entitled to contribute ideas.
Of course, it would relieve me, if I could not just hire artists for the duration of a project, but offer long-term perspectives to people I regard as likable and capable co-workers.
I want my company to have a reputation for quality and creativity, but also for individual unusual solutions.
Yes, I am very well aware that this is an ambitious goal that requires years of work to reach and will come along many mistakes to learn from. I must confess that I am not yet entirely sure if this is what I want to pursuit as I am also not willing to dedicate my whole life and time to this. Something I don’t want to sacrifice is my wish to have a family and enough time to spend it with them.
Also, I have some alternative plans to rethink.
Another idea I like, is not limiting myself to the medium of films. I am engaged in writing and initially started off studying communication design, which is why I am still interested in producing print media also. Being up for anything from stories to pictures to books to animations to digital media for prospective customers and maybe even being able to offer all-inclusive packages sounds a very diversified schedule to me.
A secret dream of mine is to visualise and publish some of my own poetry one day.
Next to producing, I could very well imagine to share my experiences in lectures.
So, speaking of the nearer future, I might just consider working as a self-employed artist and see whether my abilities suggest success in taking further steps – one after the other.
Compared to other modules, I didn’t often post anything related to the ‘Animation Business’ module I am taking at USW.
This is, because the course was more about listening to interesting talks and being given a lecture about lift as an artist than about creating things.
Now, however, we’ve sprung into action!
You might have noticed the new appearance of this blog. This is, because the course finally got me to move on and take a new step: presenting myself online, in a consistent way. Therefore, also a website is in the making, that will probably still take some time to be fully elaborated.
Part of the developing process was to take up research for future employers. Analysing and adopting their style of presentation may help attracting the right work.
Above that, we were encouraged to go into details for five companies, why we would like to work for them. I really struggled with this part because I am having a hard time defining my position in the art world and fighting the fear of being not good enough. Funnily, despite being hired for freelance work already.
Anyway, I finally got an idea of how many opportunities Berlin and other places offer me after my studies and clear the fog, where I might like to end up. It is something that I somehow unconciously avoided before.
So, thanks - it was high time!
Stay tuned for a number of little essays on here.
