Voodoo Doll is so nicely mixed wow.
Some thoughts.
I think the way 5sos’ set is designed to give each member their moments of being centered and validated is really cool. Even though the pause and all pre-JBH is built into the set and Michael sort of invites the reaction he gets from the crowd you can also see a genuine reaction to people feeling so strongly about that moment and that song. Ashton really just loves hearing the crowd scream when he tells them to and he’ll straight up tell you that during the show but I don’t think the fact that he directly asks for that response takes away from the validation it comes with. Luke looks really comfortable behind a guitar but it’s really interesting to see him without it, to see that he can still look at home and in control on stage without the guitar. In light of the way he introduced Waste the Night last night I feel like he can be present in a different way without the guitar, and it’s a big enough deal to him that he wants to know the audience is present too. And Calum has cute or witty throwaway comments and the lead on Amnesia and a bunch of moments that say ‘are you still here with us thank you for committing and connecting and giving us a chance’.
During Girls Talk Boys yesterday you could see some people at the mixing board dancing and it was like really cute.
I honestly don’t comprehend how people can say drummers and bassists aren’t important like the intensity with which the guys (especially Calum) look at Ashton before the bigger finishes alone should indicate something. Ashton and Calum for sure make Disconnected and the guitar solo section of Castaway would fall apart without them keeping things tight.
Around the start of SLSP yesterday Ashton threw one of his drumsticks behind him not realising he didn’t have any more in the holder next to him so a tech had to run out with more and idk I found it really funny.
I find it really interesting that the guys can be talking to each other on stage and you don’t know what they’re talking about but you KNOW they’re talking shit about someone/something. Especially when it’s Calum and Luke.
Their crew is very visible but also they slip into the background so easily but like they’re clearly doing a lot of work the stage setup and setlist require a lot of movement and switching guitars and Ashton always needs something adjusted on his kit and having watched the crew set up and start tearing down a few times as well as the band’s reaction to things it’s clear everyone’s particular about different things (drink placement, mic stand position, in-ear mixes, the order in which they set certain things up) but also they all work so well together and everyone looks happy to be there and idk it’s kinda comforting.
I'm really glad 5sos get to tour with friends and have friends hang out with them on tour and surround themselves with good people so that touring doesn’t entirely deprive them of normal human interactions. I like that they talk so much about love during the show. I love that they’re clearly serious about community on tour. I hope their next breaks help them figure out community at ‘home’ (whatever that means) too.
Anyway the show was so good these two girls just gave me an extra ticket they had so I actually got decent seats instead of lawn and hey violet was pretty interesting because their sound and lineup has changed recently (and they did a great cover of don't let me down) and 5sos did wrapped and also they did San Francisco acoustic and it was BEAUTIFUL and people would not stop screaming for Michael before JBH so he was just standing there and I think he was genuinely shocked because of how long it went on like at one point he just took his in-ear out and stared at us and then he eventually tried to shush everyone but they still kept yelling for a minute and yeah it was a lot
friendly reminder of the times michael clifford wore eyeliner bc those were great days
Thank you for this. This is a good thing to remember.
Okay between Twitter and tumblr I found scans and like...I honestly love 5sos so much? The way they love and take care of and respect each other and how much they care about their music and their friends and their honesty and just everything and I'm so so happy they made the conscious decision to change the way they tour to be better for their mental health I hope they take a good long break at the end of the year and I hope they come back feeling ready to take on the world
