Damn it's almost been a year since I was sent away .... Oh the easy days.
I made it back to the food truck! They were kind enough to reserve a pulled pork slider for me (or I was smart enough to pre-tweet my request). It's one of their most popular items, and one can understand why. Soft, juicy pork, tenderly piled onto some delicious apple sauce that tastes of Autumn. On top, a confetti of Asian-style cabbage and fresh apple slices. Yes, this is my one true pulled pork bun love. It was perfect. J had their Satay chicken slider - I managed to get a bite! Fresh, decidedly peanutty, and a little spicy. The patty was tender and vey tasty. As usual, the buns were gorgeous. Get there, folks, or get them to come to you...they do events!
Street Eats
Here in SA, we don't really have gourmet food trucks. We have caravans, camped out next to construction sites. We have sidewalk grocery stores. We have mielies roasting on a fire in a metal drum at highway offramps.
We definitely have nothing along the lines of 5 Star Street Chef, a food truck that we first spotted in Parktown North. A GOURMET food truck.
I had to stop.
They had two things on the menu - a satay chicken slider, and their signature Mmzansi burger. What to choose?
Obvs - start with the signature dish any time you're unsure.
What a burger. Simple, but delicious, with a smokey, tangy, sweet home-made barbecue sauce. It had been made with real onions, you guys! It wasn't a colllection of unpronounceable words, with random letters and numbers sitting alongside each other like it's acceptable!
The bun was delicious - crispy without grating my palate, soft but not squishy. The patty was good, but slightly overprocessed. The lettuce was perfect, though some butter would not have gone amiss. Butter, not margarine, because those are the rules.
Even better - compostable packaging!
Great service, fab fast food. Unfortunately, my burger did not survive long enough for a photo shoot... but I hope to remedy that this afternoon when I try 5 Star Street Chef's pulled pork bun.
