So there's this Red Robin commercial where some product of theirs is $6.99 and they try to sell that price with "I bet you have that much change in your couch, or your car!" And they mqke some joke about safe driving where they tell you not to look now and what I can tell from this commercial is that none of the writers for this commercial have been cashiers because $6.99 is a lot in change.
The least amount of coins possible would be to start with quarters (because of course you dont have a half dollar in your couch. It might be in your car but if it's there you're saving it for something and you know the cashier will need a mamager to accept it anyway)
So that's 27 quarters to get to $6.75, and then 2 dimes and 4 pennies would get you to $6.99.
That's 33 coins total. Not including tax.
No one has 33 coins in their couch, and if they have 33 coins in their car, it's 60-70% pennies anyway.
