“Hey! You two, no making out in the store! Crazy kids get out of here!” a man who ressembled the manager of the store yelled. Ben didn’t respond, grabbing my hand and running out of the store with me.
Before I could even mention the kiss we shared in the store, Rami pulled up in Ben’s car and we both jumped in.
“Ben,” I called to him. “Yeah?” he said, turning around to meet me. He sounded a bit out of breathe as was I.
“What happened back there?” This was the most confused I’ve been since math class last week. Ben turned back around to face the road.
“Oh, it was just for distraction so we could rip off the place. We don’t need to do it again at the next place but the store was too open and it was too risky,” he laughed, awkwardly. I just nodded not responding.
I guess it didn’t really matter. I hadn’t realized that he kissed me just for a diversion to steal from the store. Honestly, I was a bit hurt. I wanted it to be real. I mean, it was for me. I felt something there but I guess he didn’t.
We rode silently until we reached the next store, where we stole the clothes that I needed, which was quite a lot. It definitely wasn’t my style but it would work. Sadly, there was no “distraction” needed.
We got home and things between Ben and I were awkward to say the least. Or at least I felt it was. Ben acted normal but there was no more flirting. I kind of missed it.
The night went short. Apparently Rami was getting up early in the morning and needed sleep and I couldn’t stand the awkward silence of Ben and I in the living room.
“You could take my bed if you’d like,” he said after a few minutes of being mute. “Oh no, I couldn’t,” I said. He already had given me a place to stay and gone through the trouble of getting what I needed.
“The couch is so small and uncomfortable. You’d sleep better in my bed.”
“But wouldn’t you be uncomfortable?” I asked. He was much taller than me so it couldn’t possibly be any more comfortable than I would be sleeping on the couch.
“Well, I was thinking you’d just sleep with me,” he said, scraping the back of his neck. “Okay,” I simply said and he looked up, shocked, then he smiled.
The next morning, I woke up to him spooning me, a strong arm around my waist that pulled me close to his chest. I could feel the rise and fall of his chest and his breathe tickling my neck. I turned toward the clock on the wall, deciding that I’d have to get up and get ready for school.
The clothes that Ben and Tami has picked out for me surprisingly fit me well. I wore a red, turtleneck sweater that fit tightly around my torso paired with a brown skirt and a white sweater. It was cute. Not something that I’d wear in 2019 bit cute.
After some coffee and some eggs, Ben drove us to school. Apparently Rami had gone to work 3 hours before we all got up to go to school and would meet us there.
As the day went on the awkwardness between Ben and I died down. That was until the conversation I had with some guy named Gwilym.
“You’re new right? What made you so quick to hang around grease?” he asked, his voice stained with disgust. “He seems nice.” I said, quietly. I barely knew the guy and he was already talking shit about the people I hung out with.
He laughed. “Nice? Sure, if that’s what you call someone who goes around ripping off people’s things and not mention they’re dirty dropouts.”
“They seem like fine people. They’re letting me stay okay their place so they’re beyond nice.” I was getting agitated. Rami and Ben were so generous. How could someone ever say they’re “dropouts”?
“Hey, Don’t flip your wig! Didn’t mean to hack a fox like you,” he smirked. Who the fuck did he think he was?
“Come on, baby. Why don’t we bug out after school’s out and go to the passion pit. I’ve got some rubbed in the glove compartment of my ride. Everyone would be paying attention to the movie but I don’t care if people watch. They’d just see what a hot babe I’m banging.” He smirked once more.
Stepping a bit closer to me, I backed up until my back hit the clod lockers. My breathe hitched as he put most of his weight on his arm that was next to my head, holding himself up by the lockers.
“What the fuck do you think you’re doing, Lee?” Rami walked up to us, his thumb hooked around his belt loop. He looked pissed.
“None of your business, Malek.” He spat. “I think it’s my business when you make my friend uncomfortable. Why don’t you cut out and leave the poor girl alone?”
“Why would I leave a fox like her around a grungy bitch like you?” Now, Gwilym had stepped closer to Rami, his fist clenching.
“What’s going on here, Rami?” Ben came around the corner. I hadn’t moved from against the lockers, still shaken up and afraid about what was going to go down between Rami and Gwilym. Ben and I made quick eye contact and by the face he made, I could tell he noticed how uncomfortable I was.
“Gwilym was making Y/N uncomfortable. Come on, Lee just walk away,” Rami answered and Gwilym wrapped his arm around me pulling me into his body. I struggled against his grip and pushed him off of me. “Don’t touch me, asshole,” I said before knew it him in the balls.
He crouched down holding them in pain. “What the fuck, bitch!” he yelled and backhanded me. I stumbled back from the impact and Ben lunged. Rami grabbed me, holding me steadily and rubbing my arm as I held my cheek which was now red.
“Who the fuck do you think you are?” Ben basically screamed, his hand in his back pocket.
“I was trying to score that bitch but she’s too uptight. You can have her, Hardy,” Gwilym spat, a malicious smirk upon his lips.
“Talk about her like that again and I’ll beat the living shit out of you,” Ben pulled out a small, pocket knife and held it up to Gwilym’s neck.
“Jesus Gwilym. Could you really not take on the fucking greaser? You’re literally a foot taller than Hardy,” a guy with shot brown hair stepped out from around the corner.
“Why don’t we take this outside, huh boys?” he suggested. Ben kept his gaze and his knife pointed towards Gwilym as we walked towards the exit and into the parking lot of the school.
“That’s better now. Now Hardy, why don’t we put that little weapon of yours away and settle this out with something more exciting?” he suggested, raising an eyebrow.
“You mean chicken, Joe?” Rami asked and Joe nodded.
“I’m fine with that, knowing that Lee will chicken out because he won’t want to wreck his $6,000 Cadillac.” Ben chuckled and Gwilym glared.
“Unlike you Hardy, I can pay for a new one,” Ben’s smile fell as he glared at Gwilym.
“Alright, alright! Let’s do this tomorrow. We can meet you two at that backroad near I-45, okay?” Rami asked and Joe nodded, grabbing Gwilym shoulder as they walked away.
We started to walk back to Ben’s car but I was still shaken up and confused as to what chicken was.
“Ben, what’s chicken?” I asked and he looked over to me. He sighed, “Lee and I will drive towards each other until the other chickens and drives off the road, which will be Gwilym. He loves his car too much,” he said unlocking the car. Rami said a quick goodbye, saying that he’d meet us at home.
“Isn’t that dangerous?” I asked. “What? Are you worried about me?” He chuckled and I lightly smacked him. “Yes! If it’ll cost you you’re life you shouldn’t do it. I’m fine!” I said as we drove home. He rolled his eyes. “He hit you, Y/N! I’m not letting that slide. Besides, I’ll be fine.”
I didn’t say anything else and the rest of the ride him was silent after that. I felt my chest tighten up and my heart speed up at the thought of Ben getting in a car accident. I wouldn’t forgive myself if he got hurt, or worse.
