It might not look like much here, but under that scaffolding is a bar called Baker Street Pub, on the corner of 63rd and 1st in the Upper Eastside of Manhattan. In 1965, Alan Stillman added red and white striped awnings, brass rails, mirrors and Tiffany style lamps, and opened the first TGI Fridays in the world in this very building. Without that bar, it’s unlikely the craft cocktail movement we see today would exist. TGI Fridays bartenders have gone on to work in and open so many great bars since. Fridays redefined what the bar could be in 1965.
