5/11/16 Goodbye Brazil

We were only in Brazil for 17 days but we really loved it and time flew by. We think we’ve escaped without catching Zika but time will tell……

We loved our “nature” time at Iguacu Falls and chillin’ out as we visited many beaches down the coast from Rio. Visiting Big J and the Maracana in Rio were definitely trip highlights and meeting up with David’s Uncle John was a fun surprise.

We haven’t talked much about the food but it was consistently tasty. Andrew had so much beef, that I worry he’s turning into a cow. Meals were typically accompanied by rice and beans and Robbie came to love the feijoada bean-beef stew- soup.

This nation is definitely the most futbol crazy that we’ve visited - lots of pitches everywhere to play/practice and there’s always a game on TV. It even looks like the Brazil flag has a football on it! Robbie was able to play a few games with local kids in Rio, as always the game crosses all language barriers.

We were surprised how little visible advertising or general promotion there was around the upcoming Olympics. Especially with well under 100 days to go. To be honest you’d not even know games were being hosted here - though Rio is clearly scrambling to complete construction and painting to get ready.

As I sit here writing this in our hotel room before heading out on our very early morning flight tomorrow from Sao Paulo, we wait for the Senate vote result to see if the Brazilian president Dima Rousseff will be impeached under corruption charges. The political and economic horizon is clearly chaotic for the country.

The boys would say I have to mention that none of us will miss the consistently terrible WIFI outside of Rio.

But most of all I will miss the caipirinhas….thankfully David is becoming an expert at homemade ones! - L
