Revolution is an intoxicating Idea.
The Idea of starting a revolution or being part of a revolution surely has to be one of the most beautiful and pure ideas that has been thought out through the age of man. The notion that the people will rise up and as one use their collective force to win back the right to govern themselves, from what is at the time the oppressor leads one to imagine princes in shining armour or in my mind comrades in berets. However one must wonder while the idea is pure the reality is all to often grim. I will not talk of the atrocities of war because in war both parties are guilty, but having lost a grandmother to our comrades I wonder who the revolution was for.
The rhetoric of revolutionary leaders ignites the masses to take action and create their destines and while I will be the first to admit that I am not a pacifist, and would be on the front lines fighting for freedom, I do believe that once the revolution has been won then the idea needs to be modified. In Zimbabwe the draft constitution has been critiqued and rejected by those who fought for our independence, Zanu pf our revolutionary party have in fact become counter revolutionary. It is for me a zero sum game, either people have security ( I mean human security which includes, shelter, food, health etc) or they do not. If the revolutionary party has failed to deliver this then they have become counter revolutionary.
I am running a 6 part series based on a documentary by the BBC of some of our leaders during the war for independence, and I ask you to look at the men and decide if the ones you see still leading us today are those same comrades that sacrificed so much for our freedom.
