hiya dreamers, and welcome to the third instalment of the vault. today marks the seven year anniversary of just shapes & beats.
It is an understatement to say just how much this little indie game has done for me for the past seven years. from influencing my art style & ignited dreams of making my own project, to bringing me back into the world of EDM Music, jsab has truly been a foundational part of my life.
While's i unfortunately didn't get chance to make any pieces of art to celebrate the occasion, due to me being focused on making my final reference sheets for my shapelings of the sparkdreamers project. What i can do is share many of my old jsab pieces i've done from 2019 to 2022.
starting off with one of my oldest drawings, i was heavily inspired by the pink corruption series as my full intro to the community.
Despite that, for all my years in my jsab phase, i've never actuary shared any old art up until now.
Another thing you should know about my phase is, i was an absolute perfectionist, so most of my time was drawing a bunch of character, finding out there's a certain detail i wanted to improve on, and redraw is over again.
And this has been an mindset that continually plagues me to this day, though i have started to take steps to reduce that endless cycle.
but in hindsight, it did lead me to a distinct style that i'll stick to through the present.
this part of my phase, i was experimenting with different approaches to creating the characters. from going with legs, sliming down the proportions, & finding that distinct look that fits my overall vibe.
Looking back, i can see why my line art has such detailed complexity, it's how I've done all my art back then before i've committed to colour.
One aspect that's also fun to revisit is all the characters that would've inspired new or future incarnations for my sparkdreamers project.
these were where i've started to use fine liners to make the characters pop out more.
these one's has some guess appearances of Hal from the spiritual successor, Project Arrythmia, some of my friends characters & an anime looking Goldie who would inspire a future incarnation of the character in sparkdreamers.
these lot would be the foundation to the artstyle i'll now call shapelings. they were really small, but the overall idea of these chess piece bodies would stick with me from then on out.
finally to close this little journey off, i'll share some of my drawings i've done for the 6 year anniversary last year.
these were rather quick drawings but you can see the overall progress of these drawings compared to the work i've done years back. but i would love to revisit them all and give them the sparkdreamers overhaul.
by the end of 2023, my just shapes & beats phase would come to an end, but in the process, a new light bloomed from the ashes.
I had alot of fun revisiting all of these drawings, i still got plenty i haven't shown, but i might save them for the next anniversary.
hope you all enjoyed this little voyage, & i'll see you on the next one, when i finally upload the second half of the Halloween project.
[=>u<=] thank you berserk studios for making an simple, fun game that changed my life for the better.
