The Woes of a Tiny Man
I thought I’d share my experience of recent medical issues of one of my leopard geckos.
Tiny Man is a 2 year-old Enigma leopard gecko with moderate Enigma Syndrome issues. His diet consists of meal worms with an occasional roach. For the last 2 months his appetite has been declining as well as his pooping frequency. He appeared healthy with plump belly and tail and shed regularly with no difficulty. His weight was stable at 56 g. In the last 2 weeks his tail seemed thinner while his belly remained distended and I started giving him Carnivore Care every few days. I also started giving baths every few days as well as 20 minutes of UVB periodically. I weighed him a few days ago and noted that he had lost 3 g.
I brought him to an exotic vet today who noted on exam that there was a significant reddened mass/swelling just above his trachea. She was slightly concerned that there could be additional pathology further down that couldn’t be visualized. An oral and vent swab were sent for culture/sensitivity. A fecal sample could not be obtained. The vet also used a bright light to illuminate the abdominal area and noted excess gas.
The vet thought the throat mass could be an abscess and recommended antibiotic injections biweekly for 3 weeks. The antibiotic, amakacin, targets gram-negative infections and is poorly absorbed orally (at least in humans). She also advised giving daily Carnivore Care, calcium glubionate and UVB exposure. If the mass doesn’t improve, it may need to be incised and drained.
As far as the cause of the mass, the vet hypothesized that it could have been prey-induced but she wasn’t sure. She asked if Tiny Man ever seemed to have issues getting his food down but I haven’t witnessed any difficulty. I’ll drop a fecal sample off to test for parasites when he can provide a sample. Cost of vet visit: $211.
I’m so glad to finally find a vet that I like, even though it takes an hour to drive to the clinic. For some reason, the 2 exotic vets that I’ve tried weren’t comfortable obtaining fecal samples at the clinic and would ask that I go home and drop off a fresh sample when available. My first vet just used a small probe and was always able to obtain a sample. I thought that was just a standard skill.
And the ghosts I keep inside myself // How do they see me?
that was the best few hours of my life
