the problem was

you thrived in the warmth

you needed the sun and a windowsill looking out into the world

and a fireplace to warm you

but I couldn’t give you anything other than cold feet and empty promises.

you put me in enough coats and gloves and hats to keep me warm for the rest of my life

but you didn’t seem to realize that i would melt without that winter

or maybe you just didn’t care,

because in the end, we weren’t even in love
