Sids last ever interview (circa Dec. 1978) is truly something that'll haunt me for the rest of my life. It's a video that's just barely a minute long, yet it's one of the most depressing things I've ever had to sit through. His voice was nothing short of lost and exhausted, the light behing his eyes had died completely, and he openly admitted that he wanted to die. He was in severe mental/emotional pain, and it seems as if nobody did anything about it. As if they just didnt take him seriously. Similar to Johnny Rottens "ever get the feeling you've been cheated ?" incident, how those people watched a man give up live on stage, the people in the room with Sid during his final interview watched a man give up right in front of them. Its heartbreaking to think about.
One thing that irks me about the people who think Sid Vicious was a horrible person + the majority of the populations lack of knowledge on drugs and addiction is that they fail to realize that prior to falling deep into his addiction and codependency, Sid was actually a very smart boy. He was witty and clever and well spoken. In his own words; "I'm not stupid, you know, and that is why I fool people. I act like a complete dummy [...] but in actual fact they underestimate me so much that they find out that I fooled them completely". He wasnt stupid, he wasnt aggressive. He was always a sweet kid, but he lacked stability growing up. Not to mention, he was sick. People love to point out the fact that Sid was a junkie as a justifiable reasons to hate him; addiction is a disease just like depression or schizophrenia, and it should be treated as such. Personally, I grew up around junkies, both of my parents have been addicts for basically my entire life and my mother recently passed from an OD, believe me when I say that drugs will fuck up your sense of reality, your sense of right and wrong, and they will effect your mood and thought process. They will make you say things you dont wanna say and do things you dont wanna do. Sid wasnt a bad person, but he made bad decisions; he was a kid. Just barely an adult when he passed. People treat him like he wasnt a kid in his late teens, barely into his early 20, hooked on drugs and a codependent abusive relationship with a girl he was head over heels for. By the time he passed, he could'nt've possibly known what he was doing. No wonder a lot of his last interviews were so... depressing. He was half knocked out for most of them because he was high. It goes to show what being on drugs is really like and its absolutely heartbreaking.
