This post is inspired by the question of what Half Pitch is. :) Aligning a ribber to a cylinder fin, working the project and then letting the ribbed columns of stitches to undo allows a CSM hat project to become a larger diameter to fit an adult (by using fiber and a stitch tension setting). The ability to add stitches as needed though is quite useful for a variety of projects including thigh high stockings etc. :) Check out some of the vintage metal CSM manuals online. Why a CSM without a Ribber is an incomplete CSM. When one uses a Ribber in a variety of ways, one has more creative options - including using what you already have to create an adult sized hat on a CSM. Here’s another example of Noro yarn with Half Pitch Ribber alignment. Worked on a Legare with a 72 cylinder and a 72 needle slot (equal slot) ribber dial. In this example I started/ended this project at two dial turns from the tightest setting and further reduced/loosened the settings two further dial turns for the bulk of the hat. All ribber slots were used with every second worked ribber needle dropped after all other ribbed needles were stitch transferred to the cylinder. (When all ribber needle stitches were used and all dropped I didn’t like how loose the fabric became.) By adding all ribber needles but only dropping every second you gain project width (as you also do by loosening the stitch setting). With those settings and method used this should easily make a rather attractive hat. :) Don’t know what Half Pitch is? See the second image. Ice Yarn acrylic/cotton Yarn Hat testing… I setup my Legare with a starting tension of 2 dial turns from the tightest then loosened 3 further turns with every second ribber needle placed in the 72 slot cylinder - later all ribbed stitches dropped. Resulting fabric needed some encouragement to dropping the planned ribbed columns. Argh! Extreme twist in this final cone or Noro is fighting every last effort to get it made into a hat. Further Half Pitch Noro Yarn Hat testing… I setup my Legare with a starting tension of 2 dial turns from the tightest then loosened 2 further turns with every second ribber slot used (and once done those ribbed columns dropped to expand the fabric width). For those not sure what to make of this see how much wider the few stitches of the dropped columns are over the knitted/ribbed columns… note the differences in the knitted fabric. Noro is gorgeous but has little stretch. Exploring with the knitted fabric differences in Half Pitch worked knitting. This sample was made on a Legare using a 72 cylinder with 72 ribber dial half pitch aligned using every 2nd ribber slot (it’s the same as if we used a 36 slot ribber using every slot). This knitting is not laundered. (Yes the ribber dial shown is loaded every slot not used thus in this sample - it’s a reference to what Half Pitch means). Edit: I’ve added an additional image for clarity oh what Half Pitch is (also see my prior posts/instgram).
