It was a brutally cold winter filled with hibernating and snowy misery when I decided to pack the kids up and take them for a fun night in a non chain hotel that also happened to have a couple indoor water slides. From the moment we checked in I could tell something was not right. What hit me instantly was the overwhelming smell of chlorine. It was thick in the air like London fog. Every glance from a sympathetic parent or eye of a child that caught mine was bloodshot and red; however, we had driven 5 hours to get there, so we were going to make the best of it. We went to the 2 water slides, one of which was shut down because it had frozen. Chlorine gassed children were staggering around and then that's when I saw it. The solution they had come up with to solve the fact that they were gassing their guests was to prop open a giant door to outside and place an industrial fan in front of it. It was a lovely balmy day with a temperature of 14 degrees with a negative 5 windchill. Just what everyone wants to encounter when standing around in a wet bathing suit. Needless to say, I spent the night listening to my kids wheeze and cough from lack of oxygen and then when we returned to our own slice of snow misery, everyone came down with a cold. Perfect.
