Marie Severin Iron Man covers 24-32, 29&30 inked by Bill Everett, so the two artists sign as 7EV (not shown: 26 by Don Heck, 31 by Sal Buscema)
While going through covers by Marie Severin, I began to notice a new signature: 7EV. Research revealed pencils by Marie Severin and inks by Bill Everett. Marie rarely signed her covers but Bill signed almost every cover he drew and he almost always inked his own pencils. This looks like two EC-era pals having fun. Now I search for other examples but here’s what I’ve found so far.
The earliest on-sale date is for Where Monsters Dwell #3 and appears on a yellow box by the trash, although here it’s a 7 over the letters EV.
Chamber of Darkness #4, on a yellow post-it on the wall. Well, not actually a post-it but it does look like one.
After a cover by Kirby/Everett (with no clear signature), they’re back with Chamber of Darkness #6. The sole of the shoe bottom left, although it’s rendered as E7V.
This all took place in issues published spring 1970 so it’s likely Bill was in the bullpen picking up inking work.
Marie had taken over Iron Man from George Tuska so we see it on Iron Man King-Size 1, although now morphed so that the 7 and the V share a diagonal, a lovely design choice. By his left foot.
Next Iron Man 29, a more elaborate E7V lower left.
Then Iron Man 30, artfully embedded in the yellow railing of the house. That’s my favorite so far.
Next Marvel Tales 28, on the van bottom left.
There must be other examples and there must be more to the story. Marie did a decent number of covers and someone else inked. Bill did both and always signed. My guess it was a pastiche to a previous era, when no one would allow Marie to pencil covers. They must have laughed at the thought of it. A shared EV, and the Marie’s 7.
