Expansion and compression in steam bending.
As pointed out to by @glenrundellchairmaker I should have noted that this bend was done with a bending/compression strap. The purpose of the bending strap is to keep the outside fibers under compression or, at the very least, to keep the outside fibers from expanding. I expect the results of this bend, if done without a strap, would have the neutral point closer to the middle of the part. It is still an interesting observation that, with a strap, the neutral point is so close to outside edge of the bend.
