Every year, there was a festival in Central Park. It had been an annual event since he was a child, and his parents would take him and his sister. A portion of the park was dedicated to a decorated winter wonderland, ice skating, and food vendors. Of course, back in the 30s and 40s, it looked a little different. The simple strings of lights on the trees had been replaced with LED lights, the booths replaced by food trucks, and live music replaced with a DJ. It was different, but Bucky didn’t mind that. He’d gotten used to all the modern things the world had brought over the last 70 years.
Maybe it was because he was feeling nostalgic, or maybe he was feeling generous, but he’d asked Yelena to come along with him. Bucky hadn’t told her exactly where they were going, but the closer they got to Central Park, she figured it out. The excitement on her face was infectious and Bucky couldn’t help but smile. It made his chest warm to see her like this. She deserved to have a night where she didn’t have to think about all the bullshit.
It was cold so the first place Bucky led Yelena was toward a food truck that was selling hot chocolate. He paid for two and when he got them, Bucky handed one to Yelena. “What do you want to do first? I’ll follow where you lead.”

Thunder.
Rain, Alexei could handle perfectly fine. Lightning, even, though he would not dismiss the fact that the twisting light that danced among the clouds made his stomach clench, troubled. The man could then turn, breath, and ignore it. Walk through the rain and the lightning.
However, what always sealed the deal was the grumbling that shook the clouds and slowly settled around.
Out.
He just needed .... out of this weather. If he could get away, hide, he could quietly handle this situation without any random happenstance of some person walking among the woods and catching the ex-commandant at one of his weakest and (in his opinion) most embarrassing positions. Curled up like a child, frightened of a natural--
Another bout of thunder pushed Alexei’s feet to move, ignoring his thoughts for then. His stomach churned, his body felt heavy. Between the weather beating it down, to the sound that brought back the imaginary smell. It was something one could not forget, and his senses so enjoyed overwhelming him with the corpses and burnt flesh aroma that was no longer there.
Shoving himself beyond, Alexei found a cave opening, his back slamming (somewhat forcefully) against it’s edge, weight barely supported on now shaking legs as the ex-commandant tried to breath and gasp in something fresh. Reminding himself where he was at, that it was not. That his men were not. That everything was.
The noise outside felt deafening, and Alexei slid to a sitting position. Curling against his knees, hands pressed to his ears. Quiet. Quiet. The only thing that drew Alexei from the internal screaming, the slight shaking of fingers, the racked breath, was the noise of someone else.
Footsteps. From the entrance Alexei was near.
A short half-curse almost slipped Alexei’s lips before it was bit back. Whoever this was, maybe they’d just keep going? Not notice him?
