Music Festivals Liven Up the Summer

Classes are almost over and thinking about internships or jobs may make summer seem like not much of a break! No matter what you’re doing this summer, it is a break after all. So, if you’re looking to add a little bit of excitement, how about a music festival?

80/35- This music festival’s name came from the fact that two of America’s main interstates, I-80 and 1-35, meet in Des Moines. Although it is a fairly new festival, with 2012 being its fifth year, it still attracts a crowd of around 30,000. 80/35 also features other attractions, such as cool art and yummy food and drink stands. If you’re looking for something to do on a tight budget, there are free smaller stages with local and regional acts. This year’s biggest acts include The Avett Brothers and Death Cab for Cutie.

  Lollapalooza- Sometimes known as “Lolla,” Lollapalooza is one of the largest annual music festivals in the country. It features diverse music groups, such as alternative rock, hip hop, and heavy metal. If you’re looking for even more entertainment, there are comedy and dance shows as well as craft booths. However, nobody would be bored easily as the festival historically hosts around 160,000 people! The festival’s past headliners include groups such as Coldplay, Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam and Lady Gaga. The 2012 lineup will be announced on April 11 and fans can expect to see some big names.

  Bonnaroo-This infamous music festival is held on a 700-acre farm each year in Manchester, Tennessee and is notorious for its big headliners and its overall experience. Bonnaroo features a range of musical styles such as hip hop, jazz, bluegrass, country, folk, reggae and indie music. Some other attractions include: unique products for sale, lots of food and drink vendors, comedy shows, a movie tent and even a ferris wheel. Some of this year’s headliners include: Radiohead, The Beach Boys, Bon Iver, Foster the People and Skrillex.

Festival News: The Avett Brothers, Death Cab For Cutie, Dinosaur Jr. to play 80-35 Festival

The 5th annual 80-35 music festival will take place July 6-7 in downtown Des Moines, Iowa. Death Cab for Cutie, The Avett Brothers, and Dinosaur Jr. are at the top of this years line-up and will be joined by Dan Deacon, Fucked Up, and Freddie Gibbs among others.

The final festival line-up will be announced in early May, and promises not to disappoint. Single-day and two-day passes can be found are now available via the festival's website and start at the low price of $29 per day!

Alright, so 80/35 is coming up this weekend and a very great local band by the name of Cashes Rivers is asking us for some crowd participation on a song. They'd like to get as many floor tom players on stage as possible for the song "Local Drunk". Above is a video that guitarist Lucas Welchans made describing the drum part. Below (in a previous post) I've got an image that illustrates the same drum part. So anyone attending our local music festival that wants to get in on the action should practice up and join us on stage Saturday July 2nd at 6:15 at the Independence Free Stage.
