Clearing out my camera roll 8228/?
Niou as Yagyuu scolding Yagyuu as Niou is one of my absolute favourite things about the 3rd season Rikkaimyu.
You are me, I am you - Niou and Yagyuu in Tenimyu Seasons 1-3
The new Rikkaimyu, especially it’s Niou and Yagyuu, hit me pretty hard and sent be back to D1 craziness. So I decided to take a new look at the earlier seasons as well.
Season 1: Baba Tooru & Nakagauchi Masataka
For about ten years, this was the only musical version of them I had seen. Both me and my Niou person loved it. And while I hadn’t watched this in a long while, I always kept listening to the soundtrack, so their voices and the way they deliver their lines have really defined what D1 sounds like for me.
I always thought Baba and Masa had a certain chemistry, and looking at this again, I can still see it. They are a pretty combination, and most importantly, they speak well. Masa has the best nasty little laugh for Niou, and Baba’s tone is just the right combination of polite and proud for Yagyuu. When I think of his voice, I think this instead of the voice actor in anime. Same for his looks, actually - I can’t think of Yagyuu as anything but beautiful like this.
One thing that doesn’t really work is their looks when switched - they don’t look alike, and suit their actual characters rather than being good for whichever. Their dancing is also quite unbalanced - as much as I like the unlikely ballet Niou, in hindsight, Masa could have toned it down a bit.
The hospital scene doesn’t have as much D1 as the later versions, but otherwise I felt they were nicely in tune and connected during this version. They feel like an “us against the world” team like a good D1 is supposed to. Still good, still love this.

Season 2: Mikata Ryousuke & Kubota Hidetoshi
I had a long break from Tenimyu, and ended up seeing this just last year. And while I loved some parts of this version in general, this D1 just didn’t do it for me.
For me, there’s not much connection and chemistry between them. Both of them deliver some of the lines in a really strange way. Niou seems to lack personality and Yagyuu class.
One thing that is interesting about this combination is that I felt they actually kind of looked better when switched. They would have been even better had their makeup been optimized for that. And it was not just the looks: in a way, Kubota’s Yagyuu had the calmness he needed, and Mikata’s Niou more liveliness. I really appreciate this effect from the switch, as the other versions don’t really have it.
The version of their song in this version didn’t make any impression on me, and I haven’t really listened to the soundtrack.
But really, the lack of connection is what troubles me the most. I hate the fact how D1 has seemed to drift apart since the beginning of Shinpuri, and I do not want to see them like that in Kantou. Personally I don’t find either character very interesting if separated from the other, and I think this is what happened here. And why in the world would you seperate them and diminish the impact of the switch?
Maybe I will need to rewatch this a few times to see if I can make myself like it more, but for now, this is my feeling about it.

Season 3: Oosumi Yuuta & Gotou Dai
For these two, I first heard the soundtrack, then saw them live in Higamyu, and this week Rikkaimyu from DVD. I first loved their singing voices, but was comparing the lines to 1st Season and didn’t immediately like them.
But oh dear. Seeing these boys, they are so amazing. They are balanced and beautiful. Their dynamic is as it should be, and we get to see a lot of details that really show their connection. As I already wrote here, especially Oosumi is really attentive as Yagyuu, always gesturing to Niou for various purposes.
While some of their lines still don’t sound as good to me as in 1st, they do speak pretty well. Yagyuu has class and self-confidence, Niou detachedness and scorn. And I have missed that for him, so I absolutely love this Niou sitting around looking unimpressed while Yagyuu engages in nice commentary. Gotou has nice body language; I was always happy just to see what new position he was sitting in.
Actually these two have good control of their bodies in general, and they manage to communicate the important fundamentals just by the way they stand: Yagyuu’s back is impossibly straight at times, Niou is slouching like he should. Their expressions are disciplined. Yagyuu has the best disapproving face, Niou has a lovely, tiny hint of smile for Yagyuu.
During the switch, the effect is somewhat similar to 1st when it comes to looks - they aren’t quite as natural like this. That said, some of their manners work amazingly well: Yagyuu’s Niou has a nice sharp edge, Niou’s Yagyuu is perfect for scolding Niou.
I love the new song for being about both of them instead of mostly about Niou. They sing it well, it has power and it is a pleasure to listen to. Unfortunately it just isn’t very in character, especially for Yagyuu but not perfectly for Niou either - and in my opinion, not a good match for their mood and dynamic in general. I guess what I would really want is either a chillier take on the “us against the world” mentality, or a more intense and private look at the “I am you, you are me” content. I’m thinking of something like Kejime.
If there’s anything more I would ask for this version, maybe I’d like just a little bit of warmth and casuality from Niou to Yagyuu. Part of this is a problem of writing - during the match, we hear some commentary from Yagyuu, but not from Niou. And while I definitely want the musical to follow manga instead of the anime, I did always like Niou’s introspection at the end of the match in the anime, and if that had been included, this would have been pretty close to perfect.
Well, even if it wasn’t perfect yet... I love this. Their mood is right, they are connected and they have some important details down. This is my new favourite and inspiration.

And that’s it. If everything goes as planned, I will get to see these new favourites live this spring at Rikkai Team Live and Dream Live. But for now, I’m just thankful of these three generations of D1 that showed us a little bit different aspect of these boys and helped define who they are or can be as characters.
As always, D1 for life.
