SMC has contributed over PHP 877M to COVID-19 fight
San Miguel Corporation (SMC) donations to the country's efforts to address the impact of the Covid-19 on the country totaled PHP 877.8 million, including a personal donation of 100 million pesetas from its president Ramon S. Ang .
“We report on our progress so that people can be sure that help is on the way, that many organizations are mobilizing and working together to support the government and our Filipinos. Together we will win this fight, ”said Ang.
In the third week of government enhanced quarantine in the community, the company reported on the progress of its ongoing initiatives to support medical frontliners, the national government, local government units and other organizations.
The company has begun operationalizing its PHP 500 million personal protective equipment (PPE) commitment to medical frontliners. It has partnered with the Ministry of Trade and Industry (DTI) to tap local suppliers. The procurement of PPE via the network of global suppliers is also in progress.
Canned goods, meat products, cookies, bread and coffee totaling PHP 199.4 million are donated to LGWs, non-profit organizations, non-profit organizations, church groups and direct donations to vulnerable communities. Deliveries to various locations in Luzon are ongoing.
The company has also more than doubled its initial commitment to donate 500,000 kilos of rice to vulnerable communities. So far, 1.1 million kilos of rice worth over 38 million PHP have been procured. Deliveries to beneficiary communities and families continue.
Ang and his family also donated PHP 100 million to Project Ugnayan, a broad coalition of private companies working together to help the government fight Covid-19.
Ginebra San Miguel Inc. has upgraded its facilities nationwide to produce 70% ethyl alcohol for disinfection. This means that 100,000 liters of alcohol can now be produced every day. By April 4, SMC's alcohol donations to hospitals, the Department of Health (DoH), LGUS, PNP checkpoints, and other key institutions had reached PHP 518,340 liters worth PHP 38.9 million.
Free use of the SMC toll roads – the Southern Tagalog Arterial Road (STAR), the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX), the Skyway, the NAIAx and the Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Expressway (TPLEX) – for doctors and nurses who have a week long, PHP also reached 1.1 million on April 4. So far, around 2,000 doctors have taken advantage of the privilege.
SMC Infrastructure has also assisted the Philippine National Police and the Armed Forces of the Philippines with the checkpoints set up along their expressways. This includes the provision of portals, motorcycles and drivers, passenger cars, generators, tower lights, traffic cones, barriers, tents, water and disinfection teams.
“We work with a broad and diverse base of partners – from the national government to the LGUS. Our hospitals and doctors, the nonprofit groups and nonprofits, the church groups, the PNP and the AFP – because we want to make sure that as many Filipinos as possible get help, ”said Ang.
Ang reiterated that SMC's efforts would continue throughout the crisis. It has repeatedly assured the public that its vital activities – food production, electricity and fuel production, and infrastructure operations – will also continue to ensure Filipinos access to essential goods and services.
