Lately I've been watching these documentaries about people who carry out mass violence and their lives and ideologies.

Something about these people that has really struck a chord with me is that many of them sound exactly like anti-Israel leftists in their anti-Zionist/antisemitic rhetoric. I already knew that mass shooters tend to hold antisemitic beliefs and were often radicalized by isolation and the internet into far-right ideology, but the language they use is so striking; it feels like stuff my communist former friends would say about Israel.

For example, consider a man who killed two police officers during a several-hour standoff at his home in 2009, Richard Poplawski. He wrote:

"The federal government, mainstream media, and banking system in these United States are strongly under the influence of -- if not completely controlled by -- Zionist interest."

and, separately:

"One can read the list of significant persons in government and in major corporations and see who is pulling the strings. One can observe the policies and final products and should walk away with little doubt there is Zionist occupation and -- after some further research & critical thinking -- will discover their insidious intentions."

Poplawski was an active user of white supremacist sites such as Stormfront as well as conspiracy sites such as InfoWars. Despite being definitely a right-winger by political affiliation, his rhetoric about Zionists perfectly mirrors the rhetoric you see out of the extreme left today. Poplawski even expressed frustration that "not enough attention was being focused on evil."

Every time Jews are scapegoated for societal ills, the people who buy into the antisemitism think they are on the right side of things. Poplawski thought he was fighting evil by opposing supposed Zionist influence in the US. Anti-Israel leftists today believe in that same Zionist influence in the US and believe that carrying out random acts of anti-Jewish violence is praxis vis-a-vis anti-Zionism, just like Poplawski and many other hate-motivated right-wing mass shooters did. It's the same antisemitism, with the same scapegoat, under the same name.
