Now that I have a Nintendo Switch, I’ve borrowed one game from my local library, and bought one on sale. The former is 88 Heroes: 98 Heroes Edition. The latter is Blossom Tales: The Sleeping King.
88 Heroes seems decent. It reminds me of N+, a ninja game which I sort of liked on PSP. In each stage, the player has to get a character to an exit with no damage. The game tells the player whether the hero can or can’t attack. However, it does not provide much other info about their capabilities. I’ve attempted to attack a few times, only to learn that the character has an unusual range, or is somewhat slow.
Blossom Tales was made about 25 years after Link to the Past, and it’s clear that the developers liked LttP a lot. Some of the push / pull puzzles are a bit vague. The graphics look like they’re trying too hard to seem retro. However, I think this one was worth my money. It’s funny without pop culture shout-outs, and the dialogue doesn’t interrupt gameplay. I also like the feedback through the Joy-Con controllers.
If you’re curious, I consider both Link to the Past and Link’s Awakening to be personal favorites. I enjoyed the original Legend of Zelda, though sometimes it’s awfully obtuse. The second game had great moments, but (as I learned when replaying it in the mid-2000s) it has not aged well.
