Dear Grandma

Happy Birthday. Today you're 88 years young. We celebrated your birthday by gathering all of the older cousins together to cook and surprise you with a special birthday cake. You used to tell me, no one ever celebrates your birthday--well this year is different. This year is your year, and we promise to act right and celebrate it with you properly. 

All of the older cousins came, except one, for she had to work. We cooked Tom Yum Soup for you. You weren't even sure what the occasion was. When your great-grandchild, Tyler, came, you presumed it was his birthday as we walked in with a cake lit up with candles. We sang happy birthday to you, but you were still not sure who's birthday it was. Matter of fact, you thought it was Tyler's birthday when truly it was yours. The expression of you not wanting to blow out the candles, crying, I knew, you thought we had forgotten about you. 

Before leaving the house, I kissed you and said Happy Birthday, Ba Ngoai. You had the sweet teary eyes and said, "since the day I was born, no one has ever did anything like this for me or even said Happy Birthday until you all. Thank you." It made me feel so warm inside, better than Christmas day. 

Grandma, I just want you to know, I love you. We all do. We might not have everything in the world, but sticking together like a family makes it all worth it
