Is it stealing emergency ideas from main? Absolutely yes (but that could mean we are making room for new types of emergencies after the first 2 eps to differentiate from og)
Is the quality or the dialogue good? No, but neither was s1 of of 911.
I am having fun with this show and it’s actually growing on me.
Surprisingly Don (our cap/Bobby knockoff) wasn’t really in this episode until the end and we focused on someone else, (which I think bodes well for this show).
I know people were worried that it would be Lonestar rip with it focusing too much on the cap (and it still might since this ep’s focus was on his son) but it’s also the second episode, so we don’t know that for sure yet.
Also Don sucks. (That’s the whole thought)
(Edit: actually I do have a thought. It’s so strange to me how we were able to get a wonderful captain that we all love in Bobby Nash [so much so that we all almost boycotted the og show for killing him off] yet the spinoffs can’t make a likeable captain. We hated Owen Strand and Don is on his way to pissing me off too)
Blue is kinda irrelevant to me. (He’s so blank slate, with a sob story, and really clearly marketed to be the heartthrob so much that’s it’s doing the opposite for me.)
The moms, Dixie and Blythe. Didn’t like that they’re fight over a man but imagine the day they team up 🤔 (no real thoughts, didn’t care that much)
Camie, our dispatcher, also got a lot of focus. I liked that we got an emergency that she handled on her own. My issue is that the way she works the calls also seems like she has too much power. (Does that make sense? Idk how else to describe how I feel)
Onto the main focus of the ep:
I like Matchstick a lot. (that’s my nickname for Ryan; it just clicks for me)
He is very Evan Buckley-coded but he is also being given an Eddie Diaz storyline ( & a little bit of his sass) with knockoff Shannon (maybe that means they won’t kill her off this time🤷♀️) serving divorce papers. Is the way this story being presented good? I never said that, but I like that we are developing his character.
Personally (probably just projection that I don’t want to go into) I want the divorce to stick so we can go full copy and have a new firefighter join the 113 in s2 and it’s a gorgeous black woman (who maybe has a kid, maybe a daughter this time, just to really steal from the og but make it different lol 😂 ) that Matchstick can slow burn end up with. (I know he would cherish her)
Another thing is that we see Match sad about the divorce papers and Roxie and Taylor try to comfort him after they also witnessed it. It solidified for me that:
A) these three are best friends and they are absolutely the trouble trio (it was so clear that the girls and him saw each only platonically, almost sibling-like but also not fully brother-sister) and B) I know they are absolutely the firehouse gossips. I know their groupchat is messy and they all dish with each other (i desperately need to see it)
Like I can see it now, they’re at the firehouse dinner table and Roxie’s venting about an ex-girlfriend and Match is just all-in listening and talking about what he saw and Taylor is sending memes in the gc (do you see the vision?! I need fanfics people)
Final thing about 1x02 is that we have some crumbs of Taxie (?) or Raylor(?), idk what the ship name is yet but we got Roxie x Taylor crumbs. I can’t wait for them to fall in love.
Matchstick (Ryan) is a firefighter history nerd. Not a history nerd but a firefighter history nerd.
While Don probably got into this as part of a family legacy kind of thing, Match actually really wanted to do this since he was kid (influenced by the grandparents maybe?).
So now he is full of history about firefighting. He’s just waiting for the day someone asks, so he can info dump about this specific topic.
I do watch Nashville, so here are my thoughts with limited edits.
-fuck those kids. are they fucking stupid? Yes because kids are dumb. They pissed me off
-intro to new firefighter Yu. Love that and can’t wait to see more him. He’s already more interesting than Blue to me.
- Blue, that was stupid, dangerous, and reckless.
-Ryan, what do you mean by that? “Hot Tarzan is redundant” does that mean what I think it means?! wink wink (bi Matchstick?)
-I do love Blythe. She’s getting to me. Girl if you don’t fuck Dixie at least once… (we need a little bit of toxic yuri on this show)
-ooh Blue has troubled past…shocker (they really are trying hard to make me care and it’s not working)
-the chief is right, Don. Stop with the nepotism when it it concerns people’s actual health and safety
- looks like we’re getting an unearned study montage
- Match, why are you so pretty and petty. You’re too happy right now, I need you to go back to suffering.
- I need more Roxie and Taylor. Where are they?
-confirmation that Cammie is Blythe’s sister-in-law
-Blythe already requesting illegal action like she’s Athena or something (girl I like you but you will never be her)
- Don, why are you pushing so hard for him to be a firefighter? God I also don’t care about Don.
-take me back to the firehouse. I want us to focus on the others but I also recognize that ep 1 was intro/don-focused. Ep 2 is Ryan, which leans into ep 3 being emergency, and now ep 4/5 is Blue-based.
- if this show does it right, hopefully next episode will be about someone outside this family
-love my trio being teachers. (Also good on Taylor for shutting that flirting shit down)
-I need more of my trouble trio together (where are my fics?!)
- Dixie being kinda a good mom? But not too much now; I see her intentions. I can see the fics now already turning her up to be abusive and extremely manipulative (edit: never mind about the good mom)
-hate this streamer bit. so much.
-at least we get a Cammie focus for a bit. How do they have hackers-level zoom at dispatch?
-God, RYAN IS SO PRETTY!! DAYUM 😍😍
-I kinda feel bad for Blue. He was succumbing to the pressure, but at least they made him kind of right about the no pulse.
-ROXIE!! I LOVE YOU, YOU COMPETENT WOMAN💗💗
- seriously?! Getting the Brits to chant USA? 😒🙄
-so the extortion was him being a ‘good guy’ for his friend… ok, I guess (I still don’t care)
- I somehow didn’t mind that hart to hart moment (hehe, get it?…I’ll leave now...)
- I also don’t mind this hart to bennings moment 😘 (ok, I’ll really leave now)
-Once again, I love my trio!!
-the university is using nuclear chemicals near the residences?
-stop with the eye flirting Taylor. Your future girlfriend is right there…
- I actually like Ryan and Blue being brothers and nice to each other. The unnecessary drama of half-brothers hating each other on tv is boring
- I do like the idea of Blythe just adopting Blue and saying ‘mine’. She just needs to get Don out of the picture, and be a single mom to 2 older boys while she has a couple flings with Dixie…yes, please
-Ryan is so neurotic. I love him 💕💕(him being jealous of Blue beating his score…love that)
-ooh, Blue found out. But who does he blame? (Clearly them since Dixie’s got her claws in him) his reaction now actually makes care about him a little bit more. (If he gets schemey-er and villain-like, then I might give him more grace)
-edit: someone mentioned that this was a family dinner but Sam wasn’t here. (Looks like the divorce will stick baby! Woo)
- also it was sweet that they added the tribute for the actress from the first episode
Anyway that the last of my feelings. Despite what these points may seem like, I actually am enjoying the show and I will be watching for the rest of the season
