So, I’ve been watching a lot of video-game play-throughs in isolation, in particular some horror games and most recently, several Resident Evil games. So far one of my favourite things to do, amid admiring the stories and puzzle designs and stuff, is to imagine what someone actually in that situation would do. Cos yeah, it’s cool to watch a player solve complex puzzles to open a door, but that key-card is just sitting behind a wire fence and you picked up a pair of bolt cutters several hallways ago.
Maybe it’s because I’ve been obsessed with Rogue Druid’s BNHA fic Locked In Digital lately, but I like to imagine someone from the ‘real world’ being thrown into one of these video game scenarios and going ‘Screw this video game logic, I’m gonna brute force my way through this like a normal person in a life-threatening situation,’ and try and work out how they could plausibly find an alternative within the confines of what is available in the game. (I’m a bit of a daydreamer, if you haven’t noticed, XD )
And it pretty much equates to this sort of stuff:
- Need to find a key to get through a door? Have no concerns about creating noise? Just kick that darn door in! Depending on the game, you’re probably in a rotting building anyway, so that door’s probably not going to be all that strong.
- Trying to escape a building filled with psychopaths trying to kill you but having trouble finding an exit? Find an exterior wall and smash a gosh-darn window! Refuse to be limited by societal constructs such as doors!
- Complex door locking system requiring scavenged parts blocking you from reaching a key item behind a wire fence? Hey! You just picked up some bolt cutters, didn’t you? It would take you less time to cut the fence away than it would to find all the parts, wouldn’t it? Same with padlocks! Who needs to scavenge for a code in a zombie filled building when you have bolt cutters!
- Reinforced door requiring a complex puzzle to unlock? Ever heard of the strong door/weak wall theory? If Mr X can smash through a solid brick wall, you can surely find something to bash in a decaying wooden one.
- Basically, in an apocalypse scenario, you’re not going to be worried about preserving buildings. If smashing through a wall, door or puzzle will save your life, do it. XD
This is just something I like to imagine for fun. Feel free to add any corrections or other ideas.
